Should you focus on getting a good bit of the carbs you plan on eating for the day in a half hour or so before you lift/do cardio so that you have energy to burn? How about protein - before, after, both? Or should I not be that worried about it at all and just eat normally (say, bowl of "high protein" flax cereal + banana + skim milk and a lot of water)?

I just woke up an hour ago... Eating breakfast right now. 4 eggs, turkey bacon, salsa, 4 fish oil caps, and water. I'm gonna go to the gym in about 45 minutes and do max effort lower body. I think if I ate carbs right now they wouldn't absorb fast enough to give me energy during the workout.

I like to get in some protein and carbs before working out. Something like a ham sandwich

Any thoughts on how much protein from whey is too much? I'm 195lbs so I've been trying to eat 200-250 grams of protein per day at minimum and it's hard to get that much in from natural foods alone. I've been getting about 175 grams of protein from the skim milk and powder alone per day, but is that too much from one source? I've been augmenting my protein intake with lean meats, raw almonds, peanut butter, etc. and it's not too hard to hit 250-300 a day all said. any ideas?

that sounds like a lot of whey. I usually get 240-275g protein per day and at least 180g of it is from meat, eggs, fish, etc. I have 24g of whey in the morning and typically another 24-48g in my post workout shake. Anything else comes from stuff like beans or grains.

Anyway, if you find it hard to get 180g or so of protein per day from non-whey sources you gotta learn to eat right. Chicken, ground turkey, eggs, etc is all pretty easy to make and you can get plenty of protein from them.

That is quite a lot of whey. It doesn't *matter* in terms of gaining muscle, but it might matter to your bank balance or your stomach (in terms of making you fart like crazy)

Honestly, if you think it through it's not that hard. Get some egg whites, a can of tuna and you can easily add 60g right there.

you know carbs are the fastest macronutrient your body can digest right? Protein and fat (ie your whole breakfast) take more time to break down and provide energy because they have to go through different energy pathways before the conversion into useable energy. I'm not saying change things, whatever works for you is your deal, but though you might like to know that.

I woke up at 6:30, 3/4 cup whole oats with one tablespoon strawberry preserves, white flood at 7:30, workout at 8am.
