I use my brain. I keep it patched with the latest updates and it keeps me from doing stupid things.

As a backup to that I use Trend-Micro for AV. Kicks the crap out of Norton and Mcafee.

To love and to cherish, in sickness and in health, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, until DOS do you part.

DOS was awesome. It just fucking worked. Didn't even matter if you were allowed to use it, it did whatever you asked of it.

I use AdAware to remove spyware and I use Norton SystemWorks to defragment my hard drive and block viruses. If your computer is running slow, your most likely cause is a fragmented hard drive. Imagine a desk with piles of papers strewn across it, compared to a desk with everything sorted into its proper place in the file drawer. That's why you need to defragment.

Or it could be spyware. Download AdAware for free from www.lavasoftusa.com and run it in safe mode. You get to safe mode by pressing F8 over and over again when your computer is booting up. Then, go into Internet Explorer options and check the checkbox that says "Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser closes". That will keep old websites from clogging your hard drive.

    right now i use nothing.
i have backups of everything i need that is important and i can reimage my system if it gets fucked up.
i have adaware installed, but never run it
i don't install antivirus unless i'm planning to download unsafe stuff.
i've never lost anything or had anything stolen(i don't keep confidential/sensitive stuff on this computer at all).

one of the best tools you can have for virus/spyware prevention is using your brain.

That is an admirable strategy, but it's a lot like celibacy; most people would rather use protection than avoid taking the risk in the first place. Also, most people don't have more than one functional computer that they can use to segregate their important data from their everyday data.

Exactly, that's why windows problems (at least XP) derive from user-error 99.9% of the time, plain and simple.

I never said what I use is better than something else. I'm just stating what I use and it works well. It's obvious you're a Linux person with every post you make.

Who's going to setup a Linux box to run as a firewall, when there are plenty of other software options like mentioned above, including the built-in XP firewall?

My computer came with trials of Norton Internet Security and McAfee AntiSpyware, and like a n00b I regestered both of them.

Though, to keep my |337 intact, I do have Adaware for spyware that bypasses McAfee's auto-protect.

MS Antispyware on occasion... just to see if it finds anything else.
And a wee bit of common sense.
