must keep it updated regularly, otherwise you're asking to get hacked, at least in my experience

Never liked it, always felt it was worth paying the little bit of money for VB.

phpbb is good to get your feet wet but you will eventually move to vb if your forum even comes close to taking off.
The forum itself isnt insecure, but, go one week without a patch and your entire platform is vulnerable and im not kidding.
Its a target for spambots and the like as its ability to populate with backlinks is abused.
Ive seen WoW forums hacked and entire db's downloaded in a few minutes only to have forum members accounts stolen etc.

    Don't install a nulled vbulletin.

If you use VB to create a worthwhile community, it's worth the £50 a year to continue the support and updates. It's a class above anything free, and well worth the money.

I think PHPBB gets a worse name then it deserves cause people that don't know their asshole from a hole in the wall go and install it and create their own security holes, ie making admin folder world readable/executable, using same username/password combos, etc.

    not really.

phpBB has been epic fail in security since it was launched.

The phpbb3 evolution has not been as bad as phpbb2 was but unfortunately left a bad taste in everyones mouth due to it.

If you are looking to build a community and stick with it I suggest vBulletin. If you are setting up a forum for family members to shoot the shit on then phpbb is probably fine for your application.
