I want to set it up so that I have two desktops, that I can use simultaneously. And then you just move your mouse from one desktop (monitor) to the other just by rolling over to it. I've seen this setup once before and thought it was pretty cool. Do I need some special video card and software to do this? Thanks!

to my knowledge i think you have to have a video card.

My verto 5200 ultra has 2 video out slots. One regular and one with an adapter to a regular vga. It has a lot of options on where the screens can go

At work I use dual monitors, all you need is two video cards, generally one AGP and one PCI. The monitor attached to the AGP card will be your primary monitor.
