In TX particularly? I couldn't find much after googling this for a while. My room mate has a DWI, can he still purchase a gun?

    felony or misdemeanor?

all felonies are out, misdemeanors that are domestic violence related are out. other misdemeanors are fine, even if youre on probabtion for them.

its probably a misdemeanor, if it was a felony he would most likely be in jail

IIRC if you have a restraining order against you that would prohibit you.

DWI is a misdemeanor here. So it looks like he's good to go.

Is that basically it though? The background checks that are run on people before you purchase a gun look for felonies pretty much?

A restraining order gets your CHL revoked, but I think you can still purchase guns. Also, a restraining order is automatically instated against the spouse when someone files for divorce.

Repeat DWI's count as felonies, I believe it's the 3rd.

Felonies and Domestic violence misdemeanors, i'm sure they check for other stuff no idea what though. The background check will probably be delayed because of it though.

So I guess there's not really a specific list of things that says what will disqualify you: Kinda what it sounds like :dunno:

What's he worried about? Are there other things other than the DWI? I'm sure there's a list out there somewhere, but i've never seen it. If all he has is one misdemeanor DWI he will be just fine. Just expect them to delay his background check, it's no big deal you just wait 3 days.

Yeah I forgot about the psychological thing.

I was on probation for "possession of a dangerous drug" and it didn't stop me from buying guns. :dunno:

I guess he doesn't want to show up and be denied, maybe avoid embarrassment. Or if he knows ahead of time that he's gonna be denied he'd rather not try.

I went to Academy to pick up a 10/22 after I moved into a new apartment. My updated driver's license hadn't come in the mail and the guy wouldn't talk to me after I told him the license had my old address on it. :uh:

I thought I read somewhere that TX state law requires a 4 year period after the DWI to buy a gun.

I very well could be wrong.
