I use all these programs on GNU/Linux, so they won't necessarily work on Windows.

GAIM, multi-protocol instant messenger client. I use it for IRC (but I *must* stop), Y!IM, MSN Messenger, Jabber and ICQ. I use it on Windows in school too, and I think it's run-able on OS X too.

amarok, best music application I've ever used.

k3b, cd/dvd burning application. Does all I need and a whole lot more.

Kate, my favorite graphical text-editor. Notable features I like: code folding, saved sessions, embedded terminal, and split viewports.

The GIMP: image editor, does all I need and a whole lot more. Works on Windows and OS X too.

Inkscape: vector graphics editor. Works on Windows and OS X.

Firefox, with firebug, the web-dev toolbar, livehttpheaders and tamperdata extensions, which I would not develop feck all without. I use a bunch of other extensions, but I don't rank them as essential as these.

bzflag: a game I play when I'm bored. It runs on Windows, OS X and a hell of a lot more systems.

    All are free software :)

I use Eclipse, Firefox, OmniGraffle, Address Book.app, Mail.app, (Partially Transparent Green on Black) Terminal with Bash Shell, mysql5, and Perl5 every single day. All day. Oh, and I can't forget Stickies.app. That wouldn't be fair.
