What causes nonreponsive programs in WinXp?

  1. What causes unreponsive programs in WinXp?

Annoying as hell. I just reformatted and I'm still having problems. My opera browser will lock up from time to time and after ending task I won't be able to restart the program unless I reboot.

The same for other programs. What causes programs not to open when double clicking on the shortcuts? I double click and get a hourglass for about 2 seconds and then nothing.

Any ideas how to solve this annoying phenomenon?

    :sadwavey:

    My Machine:

    DELL 8250

    Win Xp Home
    Pentium 4 2.4 ghz
    512 RDRAM PC1066
    WD 120 7200 rpm

    Problem: Windows XP Home

    Solution: Windows 2000 Pro

I hope this helps. XP is crap, I've used it heavily before. It's unstable, buggy, and crashy.

2000 Pro > XP Pro > XP Home

Oh, and to Ogre, saying XP is more stable than 2000 Pro is like saying that Kurt Cobain never comitted suicide, with Kurt of course being your average XP install .

    Ummmmmmm, no....

  4. Do you know what causes it then?

    Multitasking?

It can be anything from corrupt programs, to bad registry entries, to poorly coded/corrupt drivers.

Have you updated your drivers recently?

Are you doing this on a fresh reformat or are you running other junk in the background? Go get Hijackthis and post the results so we can see what is going on in the background.

:ugh2: I know it's your opinion, so i won't bash it, don't blame xp for his problems, and your opinion is definetly the minority.

Yeah, I know. I've just had excessive problems with XP Pro and XP Home that really never pop up in Server 2003/2000 Pro.

Such as the "Hang at the welcome screen for five minutes" bug I have gotten installing drivers, including the official 3Dfx Voodoo3 3500 drivers.

  9. I just formatted but I also reloaded a ton of programs onto my machine. I tend to multitask alot, use tabbed browsing (opera) while Windows Explorer is open, download from the newsgroups and listen to music simultaneously. In addition, I've got quite a few icons running on my taskbar (in the backround).

Anyway, thanks guys for your help. It gets pretty fing annonying after a while. I'd really like to resolve this problem as it would improve my quality of 'computer' life significantly.

Here are the results from running hijackthis:

    There is your first mistake....
Second mistake, thinking this is a good thing. Or at least continuing to let them run.
All the following are a waste of power, memory and time... Despite your comments that you run these with a purpose they are a good part of your problem.

  13. I assume the easiest way to remove these from running is through msconfig. That is, run>msconfig>startup>remove all checks except those for antivirus?

Before I formatted I had some registry problems that would not allow me to turn these off but it appears to be working now. Is this the best way to go about it or is there a more thorough way?

Anyway, thanks for the help. It's very much appreciated.

  14. Also, are there any maintenance type programs that you'd recommend for winxp?

Any suggestions for tweaks that will improve performance?

    :)

  15. But I could be wrong. The programs still seem to be running in the backround after rebooting.

  16. Sorry to bother you. But can/should I remove them? If so, how? Hijackthis?

I realize I'm being a bit of a pest but I was hoping you could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks again.

Start in the Add and Remove software.

Or reformat and do not install the junk...

  18. Ahh!

Thanks again. Seems to be working fine now.

    Pain in my @ss!

Are you suggesting the Opera is conflicting with all or some of those programs? Or do those programs make winxp unstable due to a conflict or is it just the number of programs?

Can I stop the programs (other than opera) from running on the taskbar (backround) without removing them entirely from the machine?

Can anyone help me out? I'm dying over here.

Usually, if i'm multitasking and opening and closing the opera browser, eventually I'll try to restart it but Opera doesn't respond. Just an hourglass for about 2 secs and then nothing.

I've removed opera and reinstalled it and I'm still encountering the same problems.

Also, if I have a couple versions of Agent running and I try to close them out too quickly they'll lock up and I'll have to end task.

Finally, after Opera doesn't respond when I reboot in order to get it running properly again the computer will automatically 'end task' on Opera. Apparently, it's still running in the backround even though I can't access the program unless I reboot.

Any ideas as to what is causing this?

    Please help.

    What happened to:

If it was my machine I would reformat it and just not load all the trash...

But if you insist on having the trash on there at least,

    Uninstall or get rid of:
    C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\WDC\SetIcon.exe
    C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe
    C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
    C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqgalry.exe
    C:\PROGRA~1\Dantz\RETROS~1\wdsvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgbhp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe

Stop from running in system tray:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
    C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_06\bin\jusched.exe
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
    C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerVCRII\Agent.exe
    C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe
    C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\MMDiag.exe
    C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mim.exe
    C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\wkcalrem.exe
    C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe
    C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe

I would try to stop these through their own setting, but if that fails use MSCONFIG.

I assume you get the 'automatic end task' when its shutting down? Yes its still running in the background which is why you cannot reopen it.

  21. Thanks for responding.

Your suggesting I nuke or add/remove these programs?

    C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\WDC\SetIcon.exe
    C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe
    C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
    C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqgalry.exe
    C:\PROGRA~1\Dantz\RETROS~1\wdsvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgbhp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe

I suppose I don't need zonealarm but I do need the HP software for my all in one printer. Or are you suggesting I simply remove those particular file names and leave the rest of the programs?

I'm considering wiping the drive clean and installing Win XP Pro but for future reference you would not load in those programs? Why? Is zonealarm and spybot unneccesary? Spybot was recommended in the above sticky for antispyware protection/removal.

How would you set up your machine if you did a fresh win xp pro install? Any how would one know which programs to install and which to pass on?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm now getting a [email protected] blue screen of death: driver_irql_not_less_or_equal. I'd rather not have it happen in the future.
