At work we have our computers on a network, and I know that my boss can see stuff that we are downloading, and who knows what else. If he is using Windows to do that, what can all be seen? Like if I am on OT, and since you have to log-in to see the "Hotties" forum, can he see that forum on his computer even though he isnt cookied in?

I believe our OS is Windows 98 FWIW....

I refuse to answer questions that can be solved by such a simple answer.

If you're going through a server, he will be able to see every dirty picture you look at. Even if it's just through a switch or router, if it's a midrange one that has logging enabled, he can still watch every move you make.

NOTHING YOU DO AT WORK IS SECRET!!!

They can see every page you visit, every image your view, they can read every email, they can even watch every key you push if they want...

    I figured as much.

Let me ask this.........how can they not see what we are looking at on AOL? My work has a websense filter, but if we log onto AOL......we can go to any site we want.

please don't use the term midrange unless you understand what it means. a midrange system is a large computer like an AS/400 or HP3000.

    http://www.midrange.com/

any computer can log activity, even lowly x86's with squid

Does not do a darn thing if the company is using a cache/logging system. The page from the original site is still passed through. These type of proxy systems only hide your identity from the web server, if he is using some type of proxy or NAT that machines information is already hidden.

If you want to surf porn or other stuff that is not appropriate at work, do it at home. Trust me they can see what your doing on the company machines.

I think he was referring to 'midrange' as a level of service from a router or switch. Personally I never heard of using a switch to log web activity...

Funny enough HP still refers to the HP3000 as a minicomputer. In the EOL statement they stated the minicomputer HP3000 is being replaced with the midrange HP9000...

I was refering to the switch being midrange, not the server.

The only thing I would suggest is, don't view anything naughty from work, wait till you get ohme, it's not worth it...

Actually, I was just making an example with the hotties forum. I gave it as an example since you have to be logged in to see it.......well, along with OT in general.

Ok lets try to make this as simple as possible. Most companies use (or should) some type of proxy system for internet access. Most of the proxy systems use a cache system to save overhead.

You type in www.BadShitIShouldNotBeLookingAtWork.com/forums and you log in. If YOU can see the page, THEY have it in the cache. THEY have it in the cache, THEY can see the page.

If they are packing sniffing most software they would use will allow them to save the ethernet packets as a data, which allows them to reconstruct the page. (Most packet sniffer I have used will detect an HTML page or JPG/GIF/PNG image and will reconstruct it without much intervention...)

So again, THEY CAN SEE EVERYTHING YOU DO!!! Every page you visit, every image you see, every word you type (including passwords if they are good).

To add to what's said... The above assumes that the sniffing [data gathering/collecting] is done outside your computer.

They can also collect stuff on your workstation by using a key stroke logger. So, everything you type is being recorded. They can also watch every movement that you make and what's happening on your screen as if they are sitting in front of your computer.

If you can be sure that they are not collecting data on your own station, then you can try to encrypt and tunnel your traffic.

A cheap way to do it is to use Putty or OpenSSH. However you will need to have access to a server running sshd somewhere.
