my mbp seem to have just gotten a lot slower over the last year (as to be expected).

i regularly go in to disc utility and verify/repair my disc permissions. I have also moved over all of my movies/music to my external HD

what else can I do to make it faster?

I have my 2 install discs and I have heard that reloading the software will help but I dont exactly know how to do that so if that would help and someone could post how/what to do that would be great.

also, random question, is there a way that I can check and see if I ever activated my apple care? I know that I purchased it because I have the apple care protection box here but I dont remember if I ever activated it?

    back up all your stuff.

put the discs in, do a full reinstall, and it will be like new.

so I will need to save anything that did not originally come on the computer to my external (programs, files, etc)?

also will programs work if i copy them to my external and then move them back after the install

i think i may just do a full re instal but i dont want to have to redownload a bunch of programs if i dont have to. i also dont want to have to add all of my appointments into ical again and id prefer to not have to set up mail again.

Disable Widgets (although they don't take up RAM until you launch them the first time on each system launch).

Remove icons from the desktop (basically each icon is treated as it's very own window in the simplest explanation). Remove unneeded icons from the Dock too (and turn of Dock animation).

Turn off Universal Access if not needed. Same goes for Speech Recognition too. Turn off Spotlight.

    Reboot your Mac more often.

ok I reinstalled my OS and I am slowly getting things back to how they were. There are a lot of little settings that I had forgot about.

The only problem I am having now is setting up my mail accounts again. I have a school IMAP account and a road runner POP3 account. I believe that I used my gmail account for an outgoing server previously but that doesn't seem to be working now. I guess I will keep working on that.

I also forgot to copy over my iWork applications (word, excel, etc). I had forgotten that you had to pay for those (which I did) but I dont know where that disc is right now. I may have to torrent them

You can download the trial from Apple and enter your serial. Much faster.

copy username/library/Mail folder and replace it when you clean install. all your Mail should be back there.

also, if you use Address Book, don't forget to back it up. I've forgotten before and fucked myself. You can back it up the same way as iCal.
