I've been thinking of getting an NFA item recently and a SBR is topping the list.

So what calibers preform best (or should I say lose less performance) out of a SBR?

Any other input such as advise or certain models to look at would be appreciated.

Anyone who has been through the process care to give a quick outline of how one goes about purchasing?

9mm I know would be awesome in a 10" barrel. I hear 6.8 does well too.

6.8 is good. 223 can be decent with the right ammo.

My vote: SBR an AR lower then you can use pretty much every caliber imaginable with the right upper.

What kind of application do you have in mind?

I only ask, because when you say performance, I assume you mean terminal ballistics. If that's the case, while a rifle caliber will likely lose more velocity (what is actually impacted by going short, possible mechanical woes of the firearm non-withstanding), it will likely still have much better terminal ballistics than a pistol caliber of the same length, when stoked with proper ammo.

Are you going to be shooting shit that you want to kill/maim with it?

If we're talking terminal ballistics, 5.56 is the wrong answer. 6.8 is a step in the right direction.

i think a 75gr bullet would work fine out of a 10.5" barrel or similar :dunno:

Whatever caliber I get I would probably equip myself to reload as well.

I hear HPDS does some nice work in that field.

I guess I could always do a 9mm MP5 clone (I think one has interchangeable parts with HKs, someone here at one at one point) or there are a few HK parts kits out there then get a SW or MKE flat and send it off to someone like IGF.

How is 5.7, everyone seems to have their own take on it with a lot of people calling it worthless. However I have never seen anything definitive.

Still those SBR PS90 are

I was asking terminal ballistics basically. I wasn't sure how much may be gained on a pistol round and how much might be lost off of a rifle round.

As for what I use it for, it may be a trophy gun. Then again if I am already spending the cash and going through the trouble to get a SBR setup, I mind as well take into consideration the effectiveness of the weapon and get something that if I wanted/needed to use it a situation where killing something was necessary I would have a effective weapon.

Not sure how the GF would take an evil SBR next to the bed . . .

I've thought about doing it the AR route. I assume you basically buy a pistol upper and slap it on a SBR lower and voila. Is it legal to use a SBR lower with a regulation upper if for some reason I wanted to take an extra full size AR to the range one day or is it from then on only a SBR. I seem to have read somethings about going from a registered pistol lower (in the MP5 type) to a SBR and you can't go back, but nothing on the rifle side.

Better than 45, 5.56, 5.7 ect? Or just really great in its own right?

SBR Mosin :noes: the tax stamp would be 2x's the rifle's worth. Then again, just break out the circular saw and file and you can be up and running in minutes.

It would be one of the best loads you could put in such a rifle, but I don't know that I'd call it good. 5.56 isn't an ideal round to start with then you lop off like half the barrel.... I suspect the fragmentation range from such a round would be very short, cqb range.

BTW how hard is it to move with a NFA item? Or possessing and NFA item out of state (where it is still legal to own of course) while maintaing a legal residence in another state?

Use 75 or 77 grain 5.56 and you're doing okay. But for the price and availability of that ammo, you could probably look at 6.8. There are still some shitty 6.8 rounds, so you'll need to research which of the available loads are good performers.

How about if one goes the trust route and then move both within a state and to another state?
