if your heart rate's the same for the same amount of time??

It just seems that treadmill is harder for me, but I can keep my heart rate where I want it to be easier while on the elliptical.

    thanks

Stairs aren't exactly bad for your joints. They're pretty damn low impact, unlike running.

Unless you have serious joint issues and a doctor's not, don't be a pussy about it.

    Treadmill=weightbearing=more intensity=more calories burned.

That said, slow walking on the treadmill burns less than going really hard on the elliptical.

but isn't 'calories burned' based on heart rate, and if your heart rate is the same on both machines wouldn't you be burning the same amount of calories?

    spinning ftw

it's surprising how much you can be pushed with an instructior-led cardio class and a bunch of people around you.

but treadmill is your best bet for cardio in terms of calories burned Stairmaster, I find, better for HIIT though.

correct me if i'm wrong but... a calorie is a unit of energy, so doing something that requires more energy => more calories burned, not necessarily based on heart rate

i can watch a scary movie and get my heart rate up, doesn't mean i'm going to lose 5lbs by watching it

HR doesn't have anything really to do with calories burned, no.

I am one for elliptical. I have bad knees and more then a few minutes on the treadmill and my knees are screaming for help.. I think its more impact then anything.

However, I could do an elliptical for 2+ hours. The fact that there is no impact on the joints makes a big difference.

The elliptical is boring as fuck, I never feel like i accomplish anything. So the stairmaster it is, worked for me in the past just fine.

Treadmill will burn more calories, but using the elliptical has more benefits than just burning calories.

But with that said, as far as burning calories, lifting > *.cardio.

neither will necessarily burn more calories than the other. it's all dependant on the intensity you use, incline variables, rest periods, etc

Agreed.. I'm at a point where I can do level 13 resistance for 30 minutes, and it's really jump started leg growth for me, in both my calves and my thighs..
