For those of you on active duty. what bank do you use and why pros and cons ? My recruiter told me most people use navy federal because there on most bases. so is it better to use navy federal or go with a bigger bank (hsbc, wamu, chase, etc) ?

I'm not active duty, but when I deploy I will shut down my Bank of America account and move everything permanently to my USAA account.

I have Compass bank right now. I like it cuase I get free checking/debit/online banking. Plus I send in my receipts for ATM fees and I get reembursed.

Switching to USAA does sound tempting though.

I have a 6 digit member number!! Everytime they ask me for my member number, i give to them, and they wait, and stare at me.. I let about a 10 secs go by.. and then say" Thats it, Ive been with your bank for some time".
I even had one girl tell me" Sir, that cant be your member number"
Whatever bank you choose, I would make sure they are a member of

You can use any bank in that directory like it is your own, with no charges even for ATM.

I've been using Navy Federal since 93. I still use them. They are the only banking institution I use. I use them for everything.

It's automatic, the fine print is as follows:

No charge for the first ten ATM withdrawals from non-USAA ATMs per monthly statement cycle; additional withdrawals are $1 each. USAA Federal Savings Bank will automatically refund up to $15 for domestic ATM surcharges incurred per account, per statement cycle.

Most ATM fees are about 2 - 3, so given that you only getting about five or so free withdrawlas
