by that I mean allowing them to develop a style that creates a signature for the band, rather than just keeping time.

Iron Maiden would top my list. Nicko

James King of Origin. Fastest drummer I have ever seen and makes it look so effortless.

Cowboy Mouth. The band is centered around the drummer. He develops the whole sound. When they're on stage, the place a singer would be, is taken by the drummer and his set-upfront and center.

Both of mine have already been stated here. Dailor from Mastodon is brilliant, as is Lopez from Opeth (a shame he won't be playing with them anymore).

How about Jimmy Chamberlain from the Smashing Pumpkins? Go back and listen to their first 3 albums....fantastic drumming.

Joey Jordison is a reallly good drummer, sadly hes in a gay band. He use to be in Anal Blast, I dont get how he went from a sweet grind band to a gay ass numetal band. I saw him play with Satyricon once, he did a good job.

    Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater
Danny Carey of Tool- not my favorite, but definetly makes the band strong and unique...

Josh Fresshe? idk how to spell it, he's basically the biggest drum whore ever but he does amazing work- I believe he did all the drums on APC's albums

I'm going to get an ass pounding for this, but really guys... The one drummer in history who has a completely unique style? Soneone who isn't a human metronome? Come on, he didn't even keep the band on time. He drummed because it sounded friggen' amazing. Keith Moon from The Who. I would rank Bonham up there as well because he is pretty awesome at developing ways to keep time when doing completely ridiculous counter-bass and snare beats. (Black Dog comes to mind there). fuck Moby Dick though. Next on my list would be RHCP drummer. That man is amazing.
