    Favorite movies of 2006
    In this order...

    1. The Last Kiss - A brutally realistic and refreshing look at relationships for the late 20something crowd convincingly showing the unpleasant side of love and commitment.
    2. The Departed - The uglist movie you'll love with grittyness and nonstop throbbing action.
    3. Borat - Funniest and most original comic act in a very long time.
    4. Cars - Heartwarming film that teaches the value of community and loyalty with witty dialogue that adults can appreciate.
    5. Clerks 2 - Funny as it was vulgar with, surprisingly, a lot of heart.
    6. V for Vendetta - Great drama and action with political overtones appropriate to current events.
    7. The Descent - Action packed film that terrifies without needing stuff to suddenly jump out to startle you or needing disgusting bloody special effects.
    8. Thank You for Smoking - Thought-provoking political film that dares to offend to assert its point.
    9. Mission Impossible 3 - Great nonstop action and storyline...if you can ignore Tom Cruise's offscreen antics.
    10. Fearless - A perfectly choreographed martial arts film with an uplifting storyline.

    Honorable Mention
    - World Trade Center
    - The Prestige
    - Babel
    - Why We Fight

    ======================================

    Worst movies of 2006
    In this order...

    1. Lady in the Water - M. Night Shyamalan had the audacity to cast himself onscreen as a Christ-like figure to save humanity in this utterly ridiculous film that makes absolutely no sense.
    2. The Lake House - Chick-flick at its worse...lame barf-inducing story that doesn't try to make sense.
    3. An American Haunting - Scares you only with ghosts suddenly and repeatedly popping out.
    4. The Hills have Eyes - Bloodfest for the sake of grossing you out and nothing more.
    5. The Sentinel - Film about a retarded guy -- but the actor does a horrible job pretending to be retarded...which makes this movie completely retarded.

Best/Worst for me (dates are from one website, so no idea if they are accurate)

    Best:
    Thank You For Smoking (mar)
    Lucky Number Slevin (apr)
United 93 (apr) (Supposedly very accurate ... except for the UPS plane.)
    The Proposition (may)
    Cars (june)
Superman Returns (june) (I admit, I may be the only person who liked it.)

    Worst:
    Bloodrayne (jan)
    Date Movie (feb)
    Ultraviolet (mar)
    Poseidon (may)
    Nacho Libre (june)
    Miami Vice (july)

And of course a ton of other movies came out this year, though I rent most movies, so these were all avalable to rent in 06. I didn't include any movies from Sept and on, since I hadn't seen them yet.

I will also give an honorable mention to The Descent (2005) since it wasn't released in the US until '06.

I'm not going to give a list, but i feel casino royale should have it's place on the best list.

What I've seen of 2006 hasn't blow me away, no 10/10's or anything, but my faves were:

Borat 8/10 - dumb, raunchy, enjoyable
Children of Men 8/10 - an interesting mix of violence and sci-fi dystopia, I'd call it the first competent video-game type movie
The Departed 8/10 - lightning-quick streaks of witty profanity
An Inconvenient Truth 8/10 - big fan of documentaries, pt.1
Lucky Number Slevin 7/10 - I love my glorified-violence gangster movies, there were slim pickings this year, so this will have to do
A Prairie Home Companion 7/10 - flawed, but its quirky characters fleshing out a by-gone era of radio makes me all nostalgic
A Scanner Darkly 8/10 - astonishing animation, decent enough plot and humor
Shadow Company 7/10 - big fan of documentaries, pt.2
United 93 9/10 - astonishingly competent: sparse and blunt, no overwrought moments
Who Killed the Electric Car? 9/10 - big fan of documentaries, pt.3

Now, for the ones I didn't like. I tend to stay away from Scary-Movie-XXXVIIIXFDXXCC movies that are going to be obvious stinkers, so this list of "Worst of the Year" isn't necessarily of bad movies, just the worst I've seen:

America: From Freedom to Fascism 1/10 - OK, this is just bad
Haebyonui yoin [Woman on the Beach] 5/10 - was very hyped-up from TIFF-reports, expected more, found nothing
Inside Man 4/10 - just never got into it, too much oh-aren't-we-clever
The Journals of Knud Rasmussen 4/10 - I wanted to love this so much, the first movie filmed in the Inuktitut language, but the storyline was just so tepid and slow
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 5/10 - I loved, loved, loved the first one for its subtle wit, but this one was too long, with the latter 1.5 hours being sucked dry of any humor, instead waddling around in the dumbest, most pointless, embarrassing-to-watch 'action'
Running with Scissors 5/10 - the trailer was funny, but to my great chagrin the movie wasn't; the literally took all the movie's funny scenes and put into the trailer; everything else in the movie is tedious, repetitive psychosis
Shortbus 4/10 - yes, you're fucking, so what? Most people that dislike this movie seem to find the explicitness distasteful. I didn't, I was just bored. Who knew the insecurities and sex problems of absurdly hot New Yorkers could be so boring?

The rest of the 2006 stuff I watched: Casino Royale 7/10; Art School Confidental 5/10; Death of a President 5/10; Little Miss Sunshine 6/10; The Queen 7/10; Pan's Labyrinth 6/10; Snakes of a Plane 5/10; Takes of the Rat Fink 6/10; Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby 7/10; Volver 6/10; The War Tapes 8/10; The Wind That Shakes the Barley 7/10; Wordplay 6/10

Good stuff that I liked, but are actually 2005: Brick, Caché, The Proposition, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Thank You for Smoking

Stuff I still have to see of 2006: The Fountain, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima, L’Enfant, Mutual Appreciation, Science of Sleep, Jesus Camp, Half Nelson, The Prestige, The Devil and Daniel Johnston

So there's a lot of great stuff I've yet to see, but right now I'm on a Criterion binge, seen over 100 of them this year, I figure I've gotta ground myself in the classics and catch up with 2006 et al. later. It was a great year cinematically, since I saw these Criterions for the first time: Horí, má panenko (1967) 10/10, Angst essen Seele auf (1974) 9/10, Divorzio all'italiana (1961) 9/10, Ikiru (1952) 9/10, Jungfrukällan (1960) 9/10, The Third Man (1949) 9/10, etc.

I haven't thought much about best/worst. But, if you put V for Vendetta on your top 10 worst, then you clearly didn't understand the movie in the least bit.

Any Orwell or Huxley reader would truly appreciate the movie, let alone anybody else who knows an iota about history.
