:dunno: I have Oink and it's good for a lot of apps, but I was wondering if there was anything else out there.

Are you really that dense that you can't interpret what he said? He said, "buy the goddamned software, you useless drain on society!"

speaking as a mac developer, here's why: most of the smaller, indie-devs will not bother making it any more.

i, for instance, used to make donation-ware. i was very appreciative of the few who did donate--whether it was a couple of bucks, chipping in with support on the forums, adding code, translating the software to another language--it made it feel like the amount of time i was putting into the effort was appreciated and worthwhile. but after a while, that stopped happening. people just expect things for free and demand new features and prompt (less than 24 hours) support, as if i, the free software developer, owe them. hell, i even saw my app trades on warez sites ( ). it became a job...just with long hours and no pay.

i no longer bother with freeware. my time demands money. i'd like to quit my job and put out mac software (like shareware) full-time. but this is the kind of attitude that guarantees that i can't do that and so most of what i develop now stays in a small circle of family and friends.

I will pay indie developers for thier software, you know the $5-$25 contribution. I just won't pay $1500 to screw around in Photoshop. And as for media such as Music, Movies and TV shows, I won't pay for that because its all over priced. Twenty fucking dollars for a god damn CD with 15 songs? After the costs of printing and burning the CD, making the Case, buying Studio time etc someone down the line is making $10 off each album that they sell. Thats fucking rediculious. Music industry is killing itself.

I have bought more shareware on my mac than any other platform I have ever used.

    Business Card Composer
    FAQtor
    iTunes Catalog
    MoneyDance
    Photo to Movie
    Snapz Pro
    SuperDuper!

I have lots of reasons for buying the software but for the most part, people dont want to pay for some application they are only going to use once. I am more prone to buy a particular piece of software for these reasons:
    1. If I'm going to use it alot
    2. If it has limited functionality unless I buy the full version
    3. If there is no serial/crack
    4. If it has online functionality which requires the correct serial

Thats just the way it is.

If one is going to use it for business purpose...just buy the fucking software no matter how much the price is i.e. Photoshop.

If youre just using it to fuck around (chops and shit), i dont mind downloading it. For movies I just buy the DVD for movies I like, and i support them by actually going to the theaters with friends and shit. Music I hardly buy anymore except for some indie lable.

Same for me. If its for personal use, I'm not shelling out ~2K for CS3, etc etc etc.. but if its for the office, we p-card that shiznit.

I haven't bought a CD in a long time, however.

CDs I rarely buy but I purchase online music from time to time. I think NIN is going to offer mp3s downloads at 192kbs for 5 bucks for the entire album on thier website via paypal. And they going to ask you to further support them by going to concerts and buying tshirts etc.

Now thats the way to do things.

i buy shareware if i use it regularly... and i find it does the job well or looks promising.. but if its something im going to use twice and i need the full version to do something.. i have no beef in warezing it

Purchased the whole cs3 pack.. i use it regularly for work dont wanna get stung for that shit.

Tho i will warez shit if im taking it on to learn it.. if it comes to a point where said software is turning a profit for me then i will purchase it.

Ive got a dodgy version of maya on both mac an pc.. and theres no way i'd pay for it, im only using it to get myself knowledgeable in the new 3d software and work up a folio. $7,000+ to relearn 3d... laughable.

download music, support the bands by buying their t-shirts and going to their shows.

correct me if i'm wrong, don't the bands get a higher cut from t-shirt and concert money than they do from the album money?

edit: brokenstones seems to be full

So basically you buy software only when you don't have to pay for it.

I see it more as buying software when it is being used used for profit in an industrial setting. Shelling out several Hundred dollars just to add some lensflare or caption a kitty pic is assinine.
