And good places to get them from? I will look on amazon first since i get free 2-day shipping on there but are there some really good hi def music sites?

So far I'm looking at getting Dark Side Of The Moon and Hotel California and maybe something by Blue Man Group (like this)

im probably going to get this Everclear DVD-A as well since I happen to like everclear http://www.dts.com/shopping/catalogue/music_detail.php?upc=692860110793

Is there even any point in spending money on SACDs and SACD players? Aren't they kinda like the DCC cassettes of the disc world?

SACD provide superior sound over standard cd's. My dvd player plays both sacds and dvd-a's.
If you already have a player that plays SACD's then why not buy the discs.

Yeah, and my MiniDisc player sounds better than any mp3 player I've ever listened to. If only it were compatible with anything else.

Just go straight to DVD audio. It, at least, isn't a niche format.

EDIT: I mean, if something is only released in CD and SACD, and you happen to be able to play SACDs, then yeah it makes sense. But if there's a DVD-A option, why bother?

I have a rack unit MiniDisc player/recorder and also a portable MiniDisc player/recorder. I mostly use it to record/bootleg live concerts, exc... Other than that I really don't use it.

you realize you cannot play DVD-A's in your regular DVD player, right?! :squint:

to get the MLP lossless stream, you still need to get a DVD-A capable player. Additionally, DSD streams have the better bitrates and do not have LFE channel problems via HDMI (when used as LPCM channels).

moot point, as most SACD players out there are also DVD-A players, thus the term "univeral" player.

Well you can play DVD-A's in normal DVD players, you just get normal PCM, DTS or AC3 depending on the disc setup.

    Correct...that's why I said this:
    .
the whole point of using something like DVD-A's or SACD's is for the lossless/high-bandwidth transfers. DSD or MLP is where is at. :naughty:

    1. Yes you can, though I didn't know that it would degrade the sound even if you had a hi-fi setup plugged into it.

    2. I didn't know that proper DVD-A players will also play SACDs, but in retrospect it's not exactly surprising.

All I'm saying is, SACD won't ever catch on the way DVD has, so why even bother supporting a format that requires a special player to play it at all, when you can at least get basic stereo from a DVD-A in a normal DVD player when you don't have a "universal audio player around?

As I said, I don't consider playing the DTS/DD tracks of a DVD-Audio as being able to "play" it. The point of most audiophiles buying DVD-A's, as is the case for SACDs, is for the better transfer audio tracks.....which in the case of DVD_A's is the lossless MLP. On the SACD side of things, it is DSD.

case in point, there are tons of regular CD transfers, particularly redbook CDs, that have much MUCH better transfers than those found on the regular DD/stereo track of DVDA's.

and to be quite honest, neither SACDs nor DVD-A's have caught up or will catch up. With the advent of the next gen formats (Dolby TruHD, DTS-Master Audio, etc), the days of SACDs and DVDA's are counted I'm afraid.

But, a good universal player, like the 3910, is critical for regular DVDs, CDs, SACDs, and DVDA's. ;)
