This things a bitch to set up this way. Way too big for serious moving around. I use it on a stand with one of my 383's firing thru it.

    softbox umbrella > square softbox.

and what are you shooting with that? there are probably other options to eliminate that huge set-up.

This is my small softbox. My big one is 4' x 3' :run:

I prefer softboxes because they're easier to flag off if I want to control light spill.

    And they make pretty light.

well i guess it makes sense now. you are kinda confined to it because you are shooting studio still life type work, but with a dedicated flash unit.

Not just studio still life. It will see use for portraits and automotive shoots. I've also got two studio strobes. This I bought because it can go on location a lot easier.

This shot reminds me of an "artistic" photographer I used to work with in my old darkroom days, this is going back about 20 years ago...

He spent a few months working on a series that eventually got displayed in a exhibition at a small trendy gallery. Turned out the whole show was a beautifully shot black and white series of his bowel movements, each one titled as what he'd had to eat which had produced the photographed poo. There was like "spaghetti" and "fried chicken with corn" etc.

I think he made around $800 a piece for those shots.:rofl::rofl:

Moral of the story: Dude, there's a fortune lurking three feet to your right in that shot.

You know what women say...."is that a softbox in your pants or are you just happy to see me".

Thanks...I'm thinking of having that one printed up and framed.

I wish to god I could remember his last name, I'd like to know what he's doing now, but I didn't really talk to him that much and it was 20 years ago. It was Gary something, I think. I swear the story is 100% true, though. I'm not claiming his crap (lolz) was hung in MoMA or anything, it was just a smaller show in some trendy local gallery.

The funny part is that he was all serious, trying to play it off as a statement of the decay of all things/society/culture/some other artsy-fartsy BS, but the rest of us in the lab had a hell of a good time with it.

"Hey, did you go to Gary's show?"
"Yeah, but it was really crappy."

"You know, Gary is so full of shit sometimes."

"Yeah, he really is a shitty photographer."

    etc.
