While I think the western ones were definitely better it goes without saying that most reviewers are stale to the traditional Japanese RPG.

I've found that Japanese RPGs always tended to go much deeper into the story, with more character development, plot background, etc., but the gameplay isn't always thrilling when you remove the story, and often contains some ridiculous shit that nobody likes (remember when Tingle first showed up in Zelda: Majora's Mask? Or some of the enemies in FFVII, what the fuck am I fighting, a dollhouse that shoots rockets, a vending machine that runs up to me and punches me?) Western RPGs seem to focus much harder on the gameplay and realism of the game world, without as much focus on the story, although I am seeing much better plot lines in more recent years.

There's a reason Demon Souls is at the top of the JRPG list. It strays the farthest from a traditional JRPG.

That has more to do with the fact that critics dislike traditional JRPGS more then the quality of the games. As soon as they see turn based combat, then know 5-10 points off the score without even playing the game.

I happen to prefer that style of game and hope that jaded critics do not keep companies from continuing to make them.

The only turn based JRPG battle system worth preserving is Grandia's. Everything else can disappear off the face of the earth and I'd be ecstatic.

:werd: Exactly.... does MetaCritic even take scores from Japanese magazines & review sites? I don't ever remembering see one. Westerners like Western RPGs more than jRPGS?

Werd. ever since they attacked pearl harbor in w w 2, they can get fucked.

But ya, JRPGs have always sucked compared to western. They are all cookie cutter copies of eachother. And as far as character development, the Japanese have the most socially ackward dialogue and character interaction of any games. They have their place in gaming for the play style, but i dont think they can compare at all to western rpgs when it comes to story and style.
