(CNN) -- A federal jury in Baltimore, Maryland, Wednesday awarded $10.9 million to a father of a Marine whose funeral was picketed by members of a fundamentalist church carrying signs blaming soldiers' deaths on America's tolerance of homosexuals.

The guy and his family are nuts. I've watched his wife and daughters on Tyra twice... wow... just wow.

these people are insane and are the reason for hatred in america...If they ever come to michigan in an area I'm at I will probably buy like a bunch of fast food and other shit and drive by and throw it at them...They are fucking scum.

God wants you to love, not hate people. The very basis of christianity is about forgiveness and acceptance...most people just dont realize it. Its like being gay to some people is worse than murdering someone. People need to get real.

I'm so glad the dad won the settlement. That's just a small start to what needs to happen. Money won't make up for the damage that's been done or bring his son back, but just the fact that a judge ruled in his favor is a huge relief.

I mean, i'm all about free speech & freedom of religion, but there are just times that you can take something TOO far.
If you don't like the war, then that's all fine but go protest in washington dc in front of the white house, not at a funeral of a Marine that died protecting your rights to free speech and freedom of religion and many other rights that we all take for granted.

This is a huge soapbox for me to get on so i'll just leave it at that.

Ugh, they're so obsessed with hating "fags" that it's worrying.
I think they have some weird fetish going on.

When I was in college, I organized a counter-protest to his protest. The interesting part is that typically, Fred Phelps is very firm on his not engaging with 'outsiders' during these events. He Preaches to his people, and they film/broadcast it, buuut he doesn't engage in any other way. Now, because I was 'a kid', he agreed to interact with me on Fox News. Well, I obliterated him on national television. All of my friends saw it, and I had it on tivo forever! Like many, he underestimated me due to my age. My 'little counter-protest' raised just under $54K!

...so does this set the precedent for all of the families who's funerals he has protested to also seek settlements?

The sooner the media and we all stop covering this nut job and his small church (yes, his church only has something like 75 members or so... 75 out of 300 million is non-existent) - the sooner he will realize his place in the US. He keeps getting media attention and keeps getting the spot light (remember: all publicity is good publicity - even when its an $11 mil verdict against him).

Im glad the verdict was against him - but I hate seeing his name pop up in the news every month it seems.

...thanks, pum'kin. But that particular event almost got me kicked out of college. At the time I was doing student government Exec. Committees on a lot of organizations, but not the GSA. The AllStudent email that I sent out had the subject "GOD HATES FAGS...". Once opened, the body just read: "...what do you think?" I literally had over 500 angry replies in like 2 hours! I took all of that rage, and channeled it into one email to all of those who replied, explaining what Phelps was doing in the following weeks, what I planned to do, and how they could help. When it all was said and done, three busses transported student from my campus to the college park campus...huge success. From there, I finally joined the GSA, because an Exec member, and did great things on their behalf, including creating a Queer Library.

Make them pay. Do everything under the law to make their life a living hell. They tried to protest in Tampa for a soilders funeral, so the local vietnam vet group of bikers circled around them revving their harleys so loud that you couldnt hear them.

I honestly wouldn't care if they were all killed, in fact it would probably make me happy.
