Ended up at Sportsmans Warehouse, bought a Remmy 700 in '06, went online and ordered a bushnell scope from buds, waited around a week till they finally mailed, put it all together and took pictures 5 minutes ago.

so the pressing question is did you the condoms as well or were you so excited about your new gun that you ignored any activities you might have needed them for.

I got .30-06 because they didn't have .308 and I was buying the gun for an elk hunt, and well...we didn't get drawn :wtc: so I kind of wish I would have gotten a different cartridge, but I've always liked '06 anyway :dunno: maybe I'll just have to save up and buy another setup in .300 win mag, or maybe .338 lapua :x:

Total setup cost me about $1050 all said and done

the lapua is expensive. ammo is near .50bmg prices if you dont reload(still close if you do). barrel life is nothing short of pathetic on anything you use...(like 2000 rounds max before you need to change it) ive been wanting to get one pretty badly, but with the ammo prices and shit barrel life because of the cartridge, its not worth it.

I got the .300 Win Mag for two reasons. One was that there is a 600m range about 2 hours away from me, and it would be a good 600m rifle due to its flatter trajectory. Second was that the recoil junky in me liked the amount of kick it had. I was thinking about getting an AR-50, but I fired two rounds through a Cobb and it left two big bruises on my shoulder. A little too punishing. :o So I got the Remmy 700 and a CMMG AR-15 instead. :big grin:

I got mine at the sportsman's warehouse and my final cost was about the same. I even think we got the same bi-pod.

Yeah, thats one reason I stayed away from .338 Lapua, astronomical ammo prices. I didn't even know about the barrel life either. Although when I was looking for my .300 Win Mag, most of the people I talked to had some in .300 WSM and they said that the WSM tears up the barrel faster too due to the design of the shorter and fatter cartridge. :dunno:

This was sort of an impulse buy anyway, I just stopped by to pick up a call, and decided to buy one.

Have you shot it yet. How is recoil? How would the recoil of a 308 version be?

Not yet, going out tomorrow afternoon to sight it in and to shoot it and some other guns.

I've shot both calibers in other guns and I'd say the recoil is comparible between the two.

I don't care what anyone says about the .30.06 and .308 debate, I spent alot of time going over ballistics, peoples opinions and range data for both calibers.

.30-06 is for shooting large game
.308 is for small game and humans (for applicable careers)

and if you want to shoot long distance (600+ yards) get a round designed just for that. .300 win mag, .338 lapua, .475 cheytec, .50 bmg, etc, etc.

The difference between .30-06 and .308 on all categories is negligable. Yes .308 performs better out to 1000 yards by several inches, but if you are shooting out that far regularly, get a rifle and round devoted to that.

    That's just my two pennies.
