Guy and his dad were arguing and the son pulled a 12 gauge shotgun. First time I've seen a shotgun wound in person. Went in the abdomen near the navel and out the middle of his back. The exit wound was probably about the size of a baseball. But the trauma around the exit wound was huge. Almost as if he had a tumor the size of a softball, maybe bigger.

The cops said it was at point blank range but I was thinking it must have been at least 10 feet back. Because on his chest about 2 feet above the wound he had a slight amount of bleeding. When I cut back his shirt there was some very small pellets. I'm wondering if that's where the wad hit him??

No pics because I don't want to get fired. And yes he died. We called him on scene

Damn, point blank with a 12ga must have been a sight to see.

I assume this was buckshot. The wound up on the chest could be from a pellet deflecting off his spine or a rib. Generally a wad does not have much penetration power but I'm sure it could probably cut you.

At big matches they put a piece of formica behind the paper slug targets so that the wad will not make a second hole (or a single hole if shooter misses with slug but hits with wad.) The wad just bounces off.

That's the great thing about shotguns. Any COM hit is pretty much a fight stopper.

I would think that if somebody brought out a shotgun, and walked up to point blank range I would apologize, admit my mistake and run off screaming like a little girl.

What would be the effective range of buckshot?

From what I've read 00 Bucks spreads ~1 inch per ~1 yard traveled. Figure the average width of someone's shoulders and thats how many yards you get :dunno:

its not exact, but its a guide.

Yeah but even then you still face pretty good odds of getting hit with shot. How fast does it lose velocity?

Going by that guide it must have been point blank. The entrance wound was pretty much exactly the size of a 12 guage shell. Just slightly bigger

sure, even if someone is past the effective range you'll probably still hit them, but you're still accountable for the other pellets that missed.

I'm thinking more about getting shot at then shooting at someone. I want to know at what point can I point and laugh rather than run away crying.

can you guess a size of shot based off the size of wounds there? When you say "very small pellets", I tend to think in the range of #8 shot. I guess point blank that would still fuck up a guy pretty good I suppose.

it'll happen. there was another instance at san jose PD IIRC where an officer was shooting at a badguy but hit another officer who was 75 yards away, and 25 yards over (if that makes sense)

Bird shot would not create a exit would. It would make a mess, and make someone real ugly but it typically would not be lethal. Buckshot is about the size of a .32 and have enough energy to create a very deep wound when used in what is considered it's effective range. At what distance can you point and laugh. I don't know if there is one within 200 yards. Even with the extreme spread at extended distances if you catch a 00 pellet it is not going to be pleasant. You can always get hit in the neck or the eye with a stray pellet and that could be the million dollar shot that ends your life.

Only an idiot would point at laugh when looking at the muzzle of the gun. A smart man would decide it is time to leave.

but they are poor choices for home defense, according to this esteemed forum.

Ego probably stepped in and dared the son to shoot, or mocked him with a, "You won't do it, you ain't got the guts" kind of remark.

I'd say the father ain't got the guts now!

    Depends on the buckshot

My federal 00 buck at 15yds was like 5" groups without a choke

You guys don't think that even birdshot at point blank range would make an exit? There's enough mass and energy there that something would punch through the other side. Single pellets make it through Geese and heavier game birds so I don't see how an either shot column wouldn't at least partially penetrate through a chest cavity?

Not a poor choice but not the best. Movies seem to spread the idea that shotguns don't need to be aimed or something. Truth is, with only a few shots, limited spread at most defensive shooting distances, and a relatively slow rate of fire, a fast shooting weapon with sufficient caliber would be preferred.

Zombies might be wearing body armor, i too, I saw it in Left 4 Dead 2 demo!:mamoru:

Wouldn't feel under gunned with a 870. Would feel better with a AR loaded with 75/77 bullets though.

Not generally that they're poor choices, especially with intelligent setup (to include ammo selection), just that there are options out there that are even better.
At least that's how I see it. YMMV etc...
