I'm so glad I finally replaced that kit lens :o

Hopefully before too long I'll pull the trigger on a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8. Would be nice to have a decent zoom lens. The difference in clarity between the kit lens and the 50mm F1.4 is night and day. I'm very happy with my purchase :hs:

I think the only canon Lenses that come with hoods are the "L" series. :dunno: cause thats all Ive owned since the kit lens. :mamoru:

I just picked up the same one from B&H. Reviews on it were pretty good and it was under $100 so said why not. How much does the one in the first post run for? What exactly do the hoods do for the picture? I saw the instructions on how to attach a hood to this lense and I was wondering exactly what they are.

my 50mm 1.4 is my all time favorite lens. Only if I had a full frame to use it on! This 1.6 deal sucks for this lens.

The 50mm 1.4 retails for $300-320 on average. I was debating between the 1.8 and the 1.4. Build quality is supposedly better on the 1.4, but the 1.8 is 1/3 the price and from what I read, has really great optics. From what I gathered, if you can afford the extra for the 1.4, get it. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with the 1.8. I found a decent deal on mine on craigslist and snatched it up. I figured since I can afford it, I'd probably be better off in the long run :hs:

i went with the 1.8 and in a month or two will hopefully be upgrading it to the 1.4. the build quality isn't the big reason for upgrading, the fact that the 1.4 has usm and more aperture blades (meaning smoother bokeh wide open).

The 1.8 isn't bad. I'm a broke college student who basically works for tuition money. I just wanted something to use besides the kit lens. This was cheaper and had great reviews so I pulled the trigger, havent really had a chance to test it completely yet. Once I'm done with school and have a real job I plan on buying some nice lenses.

    sweet!

I've only got the 1.8, but damn i love that thing. It's one of my favorite lenses. I couldn't really justify the price difference for the 1.4, but if you've got the money, why the hell not, right?

Actually, i like this lens specifically on a 1.6 crop. It makes it around an 80ish equivalent full frame, which is a great portrait focal length.

Honestly when i move to a FF, i'm definitely going to have to grab the 85mm 1.8, because the 50 is just going to have too "normal" a perspective.
