NORTH EAST, Md. -- State police charged a Cecil County man Wednesday with murder and assault with a bayonet.

Troopers arrested Robert D. Roberts, 38, of Elkton, on Tuesday, charging him with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment counts.

Investigators believe an altercation over a woman may have sparked between Roberts and Tyreak V. Wilcher, 24, of Elkton. Troopers allege Roberts stabbed Wilcher several times in the upper torso using a 12-inch bayonet that was not attached to a gun. Troopers found the bayonet at the scene.

According to state police, Wilcher died at Shock Trauma just before midnight. Troopers said they recovered 2 grams of crack cocaine from Wilcher.

Roberts also faces attempted murder charges that involve Wilcher's cousin, Elliott M. Jones, 23, of North East. Troopers allege Roberts tried to stab Jones before allegedly stabbing Wilcher. Authorities said Jones sustained a minor wound that did not require medical treatment.

State police said Roberts was also injured at some point when witnesses tried to subdue him. He was treated and released Wednesday afternoon by Union Hospital in Elkton for a broken arm, broken teeth and a concussion.

Roberts remains held at the Cecil County Detention Center without bond.

State police said responding troopers witnessed three groups of about 30 people which broke out into fights for an unknown reason.

First machetes and now this? Oh the horror! Maybe if we just cut children's hands off at birth then eventually we won't have any hands to hold the stuff that we can hurt each other with :noes:
