Saw this on Strobist and thought I'd just see if it worked....

    http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/10/free-and-so-easy-diy-grid-spots-for.html

Well, here's the product of 10 minutes work:

    Here is bare 580ex light:

Here is the 580ex with the Sto-Fen Omnibounce:

And here's the 580ex with the ghetto grid:

Yeah, I know the pictures are suckish, I just threw the camera on the tripod and fired away without even setting it up. No retouching on the image, just a resize, and I haven't tweaked the grid to try and get the best results. I also didn't change any camera or flash settings between shots. This was purely to see the effect of each modifier.

My only modification over the Strobist grid is that I used 2" black gaffer tape to make a collar so that it would just slip on and off like the Sto-Fen.

I thought you clowns might think it was interesting and it only cost about $.03 to make it.

I'm thinking the straw grid is probably more effective than the cardboard grid, but the cardboard deal is pretty cool considering I was able to whip it up from the material I carry in my camera bag and a hunk of cardboard.

After a little experimentation too, it's apparent that it's pretty damn effective.

Here are some better sample shots after some experimentation. The only difference between these shots is the light modifier on the 580ex second light:

that's pretty cool. Although if you were doing it for real... the black of the mic muff completely disappears into the background :o

The first shot almost looks CG :o

Nah, I don't shoot this type of stuff for real, I was just bored as hell and wanted to see if something as ghetto as a strip of cardboard could make a grid.

For what it is, it's really damn effective.

    Now I'm done playing.
