I'm going to try to shoot a few low budget weddings to build a portfolio so i can start charging more in the future as I get better.

I put together this sample site from a wedding I attended and was just playing around at. (this was a while ago and yes I know the pics aren't the best).

    sample site: http://www.jcerone.com/galleries/weddings/

What is a reasonable charge that people won't be able to resist and I can pull a few jobs to build a better portfolio.

I was thinking like $50 an hour and I'd give them a CD with all the full res images.

    Advice, tips? thanks.

Since I'm shooting with a friend and have done very few on my own, I'm charging $500-$1000 for the first few weddings, then I'm going to go up gradually.

My friend I shoot with from time to time went from low budget like that to charging $3-5k per wedding in 5 years, and he's booked almost every weekend until the early part of next year with small jobs here and there during the weeks.

I've gotten several emails already from my craigslist post. Where else do you guys advertise? Can I like go to a wedding store and give them some fliers?

You just answered it yourself. :hs:

Considering that you are fishing for work, i'd make the website your priority and put up pics that make you look good. Just my thoughts.

the gallery could also use some work but i'd focus on the pictures first...did you PP them at all? Maybe some close ups of the bride and/or the groom. Some shots with more DOF, or some candid shots?

I'd go through your pics once more or have someone else go through your pictures and pick few they liked, sometimes others can see what you can't.

If you've taken some from other weddings, i suggest mixing them up so you have different faces and locations.

hope this helps..i'm by no means a pro myself..just some thoughts on what i'd do. :)

You should get some friends that are already married and do a engagement shoot with them. It will help to build your site and Im sure they will be happy with some free photos

    Oh :eek3:

I guess I left off that I've never shot any weddings before. These were just the few pictures that I took at one of the ones I attended with my girlfriend (it was her cousin) and I snapped like 15 pics and picked the best few just as samples. I PPed them a long time ago back in november when the wedding took place, and I don't have the RAW images anymore. I'm just hoping to get a few jobs based on those and then I can completely revamp the gallery with newer, better pics.

    Thanks for the tips :)

Get yourself a flash bracket that will flip when you shoot vertical shots, keeping the flash above the lens and a light modifier to soften the flash.

I would say $750+ we hired a low budget photog for ours I think he charged $600 pics were decent but far from what you'd get from a pro I wasn't expecting that though. Just be up front with your clients tell them you are just starting out so they arent going to get $5000 quality photos from a $750 job. I think most peple get pissed when they hire a cheap photog expecting professional results. If you can produce the quality of pics on your site I wouldn't complain if you charged $1000

    first off, [IMG]

2nd, I'd look into shooting with Bella if you can get accepted. 2nd shooting is getting harder as there are so many newbs.

doing the whole craigslist thing is asking for trouble. Most don't value art and ask the world of you in exchange for nothing and have no trouble bad mouthing you.

Learn the backend work, order fulfillment, albums, etc. Shoot and burn is a loss of potential income and has your reputation staked to walmart prints.

I'd first make sure I'm actually interested in shooting weddings, and not just interested in the money.

    But that's just me.

Every fucking person I talk to to which I mention, "yes, I am a photographer" always says, "I've got this aunt who shoots weddings and she makes a ton of money at it... you should shoot weddings."

And every time I have to say, "Well I really don't shoot weddings... I really don't enjoy them". Shit gets old quickly.

only way to find out is to try a few. I deal with stress pretty well so I don't think the brides are going to bother me all that much. I like to think I'm good with people, and maybe I'll meet some cute chicks in the process :naughty:
