If anyone would know, OT would... that's why I ask :)

I have a domain registered with godaddy and I want to setup something simple and effective for now. I eventually want to do a nice flash website, but I need to know if there's simple templates and designs I can do myself for now until I have enough in my prtfolio.

    Any ideas?

Oh, and I know *nothing* about websites, designing, etc. My wife set up a simple enough site through godaddy, but that's about our experience with that.

just how simple are you wanting? there are a million free templates out there if you look around a bit, ranging from the simple to the not so simple. personally, i prefer to code everything myself and just use template sites to get some ideas for design/layouts. and what exactly do you want to put up right now? just a basic page with your info and a coming soon message? a basic page with a small gallery?

Use a template in iWeb. Then export it, and upload it to godaddy. Its what I have. Not the best, but perfect until I can afford to hire a professional.

basic page w/ a startup splash screen, and tabs for random galleries. I have a ton of pictures, but not enough diversity to have websites like some around here. I want it clean, easy to navigate, and somewhat easy on the eye/eye catching at the same time.

I've already priced flash websites, but w/ limited updates and so on I just don't want to pay that much unless I get some business coming in.

I agree with the above, start with iWeb.

Unless you have dreamweaver already your best best bet is to become familiar with iWeb and the whole idea of web design before you spend money on dreamweaver.

I'm not amazing at web design but I know a lot about the basics and html/css so if you need any tips just hit me up I'm happy to help ya out.

Also, if you can get pixelpost working and figure that out I'd recommend it.

    example on my site:

You can buy a nice flash template from bludomain for $100 and another $100 for hosting on their site.

do you have to host on their site if you buy from them?

and since you do use them - how easy is it for you to continue to update and create galleries

ok, maybe I'm confused... since I have my domain name from godaddy, I don't have to host it w/ them, do I? I can host it through iweb w/ their templates and all, correct?

You can create the site in iWeb. You need to host your site through a hosting company, but it doesnt have to be godaddy.

I used godaddy for hosting because it was easier to do it all at once. I would not recommend them for hosting though.

since iWeb has hosting too, might as well do it through them... right? Their rates seem pretty decent. :o

its hosting through MobileMe. It will not let you host under the domain name of your choosing. It assigns you a domain.

i thought if you bought a mac, you were automatically tuned in to everything artsy and borderline :greddy: ... guess not. :fawk:

you can host with anyone with your domain name. you own it.

go find a buddy to give you some web space and an FTP account ... anyone with a Dreamhost account could do it, no problem.

good thing about the mac is... I can be tuned into everything eventually, but even then you can't be in tune w/ gaining height. :fawk:

and I figured that on the domain thing... I just didn't know if places like iweb used your site or they added your domain w/ some kind of extension to it like google's blogger does. :o

www.templatemonster.com has some nice templates for cheap.

i would imagine you could convert an Indesign layout to html as well?

actually, i may be wrong about this. I just checked...I think you can have iweb host to your personal domain. You just need MobileMe. If you dont already have it, you can get it for around $80.

if your using a template, its not too hard to make it look at least semi-professional, assuming your using a professional looking template ;)

i've made templates for photographers that read the text for a page out of a text file, so as long as they knew how to use paragraph and line break html tags, they could update their own site fairly easily. then for the gallery pages, i made them scripts that would go to a directory with a specific name and read all the images in it, so all they had to know to update 90% of their site was where to upload the files.
