Does anyone know a webhost that can compete with dreamhost in terms of features, and a somewhat comprable price (even a little bit more is okay) but can also support ASP.Net???

yea, i'm trying to avoid them after my last experience with their crappy linux product. But they seem to be the only choice in the cost-effective feature-rich offerings.

their website sucks. Do you know if their windows product has mysql/php? It doesn't say. I noticed other companies don't offer those on windows.

:ugh: So I decided to put $30 down on 1&1 for a basic windows shared hosting account. I figured I'd give it another try. The company is just as fucking bad as it was 2 years ago. I'm on hold trying to get my fucking money back, and I've been waiting for a half hour on hold. The fucking idiots can't even speak english clearly.

They flat-out lied to me about database support. I asked about MySQL database support and they said you could have as many db's as you wanted, within the limitations of your plan's storage quota. LIARS. You can't have ANY MySQL databases. NONE. Not even a single 1! You are allowed ONE *MS*SQL database, and that's it. NO MySQL databases, and only ONE MSSQL one. Fucking retards. I'd slap them if I could.

:ugh: I hate fucking dipshit companies like this.

Only a bad company would 'compete' by using Windows for web servers. Lame concept. Windows sucks at this.

LOL yeah ASP.Net makes up for all the other things windows sucks at for hosting. This is obviously why you see 10 windows webhosts for every 1 linux webhost.

Overall numbers means nothing. Same as all the mac fanboys run around saying OS X is better than Windows, yet the numbers are clearly in Windows' favor. Personally, I like OS X.

Likewise, the bugatti veyron is a better car than a toyota camry, yet the toyota outsells it exponentially.

    overall numbers don't mean shit.

I use the linux version of 1and1 for my website, have no complaints really. although my requirements are pretty basic.

thats weird though...I think I get like 25 mysql databases (currently using 2)

this is a very basic plan, mind you. so perhaps they do suck.

So what is sucking for you guys about dreamhost? I've had them for 5 or 6 years now, $7/mo and I have 2.4TB/mo of transfer, 40GB of storage, am using 5 or 6 MySQL databases, have full ssh access to my webhost (which i use sometimes for IRC/naim), etc. Never had a problem with them and I'm only aware of (key words here) the site being down a few times in those 5-6 years, and usually only for a short period of time.

Just curious what issues people are having with them.

I'm suprised I've never heard anyone else on here using AN Hosting...
    500GB storage
    5TB/month transfer
    unlimited MySQL databases
    unlimited email accounts
    2,000 FTP accounts
    php, RoR, Python, usual etc

shared plan at $6.95/month and I've never had a problem with them... there has been one time in over a year whem email was slow because of server maintenance but that was it.. site still ran fine.

Had a really hard time getting Catalyst to run there, and prefer to have root on an Ubuntu VPS for not much more per month.

okay, well you must have very low-end needs and bottom-barrel expectations. As I've said, I've tried 1and1 twice, once a few years ago, and again just a few days ago and they are absolute shit.

no, most likely they are using a Linux hosting plan since that's pretty much the standard on the internet anyway. it sounds like your issue is that you are looking for MS hosting which seems to be a second thought for many of these companies.

i know nothing about this site, but they support asp.net and that stuff. no clue if they suck or whatever.

You do web development and like PHP and ASP.net? I like race cars and root for Lada and Zhiguli.

yes, ASP.Net is excellent. I use PHP simply because it's so darn compatible with every host/platform. I fucking hate rails. fuck that fad bullshit. JSP is nice, but when I messed around with it, it was slow and not very well-supported among hosts.
