I'm thinking of getting a personal web site for myself to share pictures with my family on the mainland. What do you recommend for a host to go with and a domain registrant??

a slice of cheese makes a better webhost than 1&1.

as for webhosts, search around, theres a LOT. dreamhost seems to be popular right now. Basically any "mainstream" host is going to be cheap, but is also going to be horribly overpopulated and slow -- that's how they make money. Go locally for cheap.

jaguarpc has been holding their own in the market for a while now and doin a good job

but for big mainstream companys that do hosting i would go with surfspeedy.com. was with them for 1.5years and their speeds/service was amazing

that site5.com crap is mad overselling and probably will shutdown your site if you even get close to the bandwith cap that they are offering
