Web Layout For Gaming Guild: Starcraft 2

I do not typically show my work on this forum, but I figure that since this project is a personal project I might as well throw it out there.

    http://i43.tinypic.com/313n0hk.jpg

    A few key notes:

    • I am not finished with designing the asset for the logo or the guild mascot.
      • Ideas with logo/mascot - We are planning on having him smashing through the top left of the header and 10-20 pixels above that. The guild logo will be present on either his forehead or some kind of accessory (sword, gun, etc.)
    • This will be fully integrated with a customized SMF forum.
    • The first iteration of the forum will also have a Starcraft theme to it.
    • As the clan continues to venture into knew games we will be adding the ability to change the entire theme of the website (i.e. Diablo III or Warcaft style) depending on the demand of the community.
    • Site has been optimized for 1280x1024 to meet demographic needs.

    Comments and critique/ideas appreciated.

    Edit: That should work now!

I guess it doesn't look bad, except, the "starcraft 2 beta begins" thing and the links block at the bottom both look way out of place

Actually one of the ideas I had was basically making the footer fixed and putting more "information" in that spot instead of doubling up the navgation. However, once there are more article posts it maybe annoying to have to travel all the way to the top to navigate.

Also what makes the beta begins look out of place, any suggestions on that?

it's covering the t for one, another being the black background just doesn't look right.

It is going to be a rotating image, I put Starcaft two as just a placeholder. Also there is going to be news, announcements, guild tournament information, etc. in that spot.

I look into maybe lowering the opacity a little bit on that black area. It is basically there to give a brief overview on whatever the major header line is within each slide.

Here is another header, with a lower opacity black background.

Instead of having just the plain background for the footer (home, sitemap, forums, etc...), you could have a fixed bgimage like they do on the bottom of starcraft2.com. Just a thought, otherwise, nothing else that hasn't already been said. I wish i could come up with designs that nice :wtc:

That is an option. I just really liked the feel and look of the footer, but I agree that the secondary navigation just looks goofy there atm.

much much better. Why not round the edges on the left side of that black background. Could also raise it up a bit and match it up with the yellow/black stripe thing to make it appear as if it's connected to it someway.

I'd ditch the black background in the footer and just make it look like the background that's already there. Us some sort of verticle dashed line or something to seperate the columns.

Not sure if any of that made sense:o

It made sense. I'm going to look into these changes. I'm working on the footer changes as we speak.

Updated footer, and in this image I'm showing the normal login image, instead of the image when you see your profile.

Should the items in the footer go left to right, instead of up and down?

By this i mean something like:

here's a good idea. Move the black box down to where I have the yellow. set the opacity and add an option to close that box. this would look way better imo

and that footer looks a lot better. Just needs something dividing each column

That sounds like an interesting idea. I will keep that one on the table. I like the ability to close it. We could easily use Jquery to do this.

Yes but we are going to be loading that script anyway, might as well take advantage of fit. It is going to be used in the forums and other templates on the site.

gotcha. I wish i knew jquery (or javascript for that matter)... for being such a simple language, i really should start reading up. For knowing as many higher level languages as i do, i have no excuse.

Haha, well to tell you the truth I'm just "the designer." I have a team: a frontend programmer, backend coder, flash developer and digital artist/3D Animator. Each with our own specialized niche.

I know very little CSS/HTML, Javascript, ASP, PHP, etc. However, I know the limitations and ways to design for such languages and mark ups.
