A Rumson man reported to be despondent over financial problems surrendered to police after a cache of weapons -- including an illegal assault rifle -- was found in his home, authorities said.

Seth Kronengold, 49, surrendered around 1:30 p.m. after more than a dozen armed officers from Rumson, Little Silver and Fair Haven approached the house on Ridge Road wearing bullet proof gear, Police Chief Richard Tobias said.

Kronengold was taken to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch for evaluation. He faces one count of possession of an assault rifle, Tobias said.

A relative contacted police earlier today because she was concerned Kronengold was upset over back taxes and the repossession of his car, according to police.

Tobias said officers who went to check on Kronengold around 9:48 a.m. found ammunition and a bullet proof helmet inside his home.

"It was just like the bullet proof helmets we wear," said the chief, referring to police.

The officers backed out of the home and evacuated three families from the area as a precaution, Tobias said.

Police wearing tactical gear returned armed with assault rifles. Kronengold, who was spotted in a second-floor window, surrendered without incident, Tobias said.

Removed from the home were two handguns, a 15 round magazine, and two rifles, including an imitation M1 Carbine, which is illegal assault weapon in New Jersey, according to the chief.

He had an assault helmet and rifle, an obvious menace to society.

I, for one, am grateful this crazy bastard is off the streets. Imagine what he could have done with all that weaponry. I bet he could have killed 38 elementary school kids and caused a few miscarriages :eek4:

What kinda crazies have M1 Carbine imitations in his home!!! I wouldn't want that kind of weapon in my community. I applaud the officers for evacuating 3 families in his community.

I'm kinda of disappointed in the article. There was no mention of how much ammo he had. Usually every weapons cache is accompanied by at least 1000 rounds of cop killer bullets. :noes:

    "Bullet PROOF helmet"???

I wonder if the author of the article, or their source would be willing to put on said helmet and let me shoot them in the head with a weapon of my choice. It is bullet proof, after all...

Damn if that is a cache, if I ever get raided its going on the CNN main page, "close to 20 guns, including assault rifles, sniper rifles and military style pistols" "thousands of bullets" and "the ability to manufacture his own ammunition" :noes:

come to think of it, that does make "the locked door" sound scarier.

You forgot to add "cop killer".

"the ability to manufacture his own deadly and extremely accurate cop killer ammunition"

Do they hire journalists off the street now or do they learn absolutely nothing in school?

As long as you can keep the fed dogooders out. Don't forget what state Waco was in. As if the feds couldn't have just nabbed Koresh while he was out shopping.

I think they do these raids just to make their agents feel like they are not "wasting" their training.

I hope my cache never goes into the news. The uninformed would be certain that I was planning a coup.
