me and another of the higher ranked dudes in our dojo were put in the high gear chest pieces, head cages, and boxing gloves.

one by one each student is put in the middle of the room, then told to close their eyes and are turned in a couple circles (not made dizzy just disoriented slightly) and when they open their eyes, it was my job to sucker punch them and then shoot for a takedown, and at the same time my partner commences to try to punch them in the face as much as possible.

responses were widely varied from total shutdown to the one dude who managed to get his eyes on me before the sucker punch, hit me with a spear (from the tony blauer system) and sprawled on my double. I couldn't see how much his face got punched while defending the takedown but once he got separated from me he kept my partner inbetween us and covered up well, didn't get his ass kicked.

this sounds like a great drill for all those times i am disoriented, get sucker punched and then shot at for a double leg takedown.

we actually were inspired to do this drill upon hearing from an ex-student who got sucker punched and jumped by two dudes while walking to his car downtown after a concert. The two dudes group of friends had gotten into an altercation with the guy I know's group of friends. alcohol was involved.

not hanging out with shit-heads and getting into alcohol fueled altercations > practicing getting sucker punched

Unless you had to take 3 shots of vodka 20 min before the drill, it wasn't realistic.

How long you been in Krav Maga? We did quite a bit of the 2v1 stuff, although we didnt get sucker punched just hit with the pads.

almost four years. we did what you're talking about, 2-4 guys trying to hold someone down with pads, try to get up and then light someone up while everyone else hits you with the pads.

:dunno: i guess it's close enough.

the guys who got jumped are in their 40's. they were at a show downtown and had a few drinks, enjoying the music, and a group of drunken Bros were being douchebags. The older guys asked them if they could chill out so they could enjoy the show, and one of the drunk bros grabbed the other dude by the throat, yelled "FUCK YOU" and started slamming his head into a table. The guy I know grabbed the attacker and pinned his arm behind his back and told him to chill out. Bouncers intervened, everyone said they were cool, the show continued.

after the show the guy I know and his friends left, separated outside, and then when my friend was alone the guys tailed him and waited around a corner, as he turned the corner he was sucker punched, taken down, and beaten on for a while. he was able to cover up and move enough to avoid serious injury. he wasn't drunk but he had a few drinks.

so yes this we all agreed this incedent could have been avoided several times over, if my friend had a little bit of sense and situational awareness he wouldn't have been in that situation, I agree.
