you should be in RAW+small jpg. and your jpg compression should be rock bottom.

if i happen to take a picture that i REALLY like (like one i'd consider printing but ultimately won't because we judge our own work so harshly) then i go through and pick out JUST THAT RAW FILE and put it somewhere else.

otherwise i sift through the small jpgs (my camera spits out a ~300k image thats still larger than most screens can even display at 100%). i pick the ones i like, save whatever raws i like, AND THROW EVERYTHING ELSE AWAY (including the unused raws). keeping gigs and gigs of RAWS that youre NEVER GOING TO LOOK AT is silly.

this small picture is generally good enough for 95% of the casual shooting i do. its especially nice with friends to be able to give pictures they like straight from your camera, not "ok now i have to go home and import these to lightroom".

    amirite? :dunno:

So how do you give your friend the picture right there on the spot?

Because AFAIK, youre either shooting on their card, giving them your card, or using a computer.

Shooting raw+JPG has always confused me. I shoot straight raw all the time, dump it on the PC, open photo mechanic and breeze through the raws faster than windows would go through the JPGs. Then I just delete what looks shitty and keep what isnt.

I'm sure he means being at a friend's place and just popping his card in their computer and letting them grab a few photos. While media slots are pretty much ubiquitous, the ability for most to read Raw files is the exact opposite. As he said, casual shooting, not normal workflow practices. And I know how bad I am about not sharing photos right away after I shoot and getting pestered by friends to put up the shots, but then again, I don't really like giving out un-reviewed or unprocessed photos anyways.

And I agree with his part about weirdos like Girth keeping all his Raw files around is if one day after Girth dies, collectors will attend a Sotheby's auction to buy his old files/photos in hopes that an unknown masterpiece of Kami would have somehow gone unpublished.

I just downloaded this and was impressed with how quickly it went through a set of Raw files.

No. I just Dl'd the demo from their website. After a some searching, it appears that the cracks out there don't really work, they only fool you into thinking they are working, and you start magically losing photo files. :o

Hard drives are cheap. I just shoot in RAW all the time, backup to a 2nd drive on import.

Ken says to shoot in JPG all the time because RAW is a pain in the ass :hs:

I'm not sure I disagree, but I shall wait to try it both ways...

I shoot RAW, open in bridge and for my first trip thru the pics, I just hit the 1 key for every blurred pic or blinker pic or just ugly shot or mistake. Rigth arrow, 1 key, right arrow, 1 key. When I am done, I sort out all the 1 stars and ctrl A delete.

Then I move what is left from the card and into a folder onto my HD for browsing later

since im new, i currently keep eerything i shoot (excpet the horrible ones...ie: 80% of the time :o) i plan on doing a clean up every 3 months of my .RAW's in LR and bring it to the ones i personally like or have been meaning to edit a bit.

otherwise, everything gets the Delete key :)

do not remove things 3 months later that you originally kept. When you originally kept it, you thought it was good. And you may grow and find that it is not good but rather horrible. It is nice to look back and see how you grow in your ability over time and can see what you use to think was a good photo. I would keep this papertrail

I do a similiar thing, only in LR. I press "x" to mark a picture as a deletion. After I'm done, I press Ctrl+Backspace, which will delete all picturees that I "x"ed.

you know you can just hit the trash can and bridge will automatically delete that file, right? saves you the time of sorting it twice.

he could just dump them all from lightroom too :dunno: the issue was the he hasn't reviewed them. adding JPG to the mix doesn't help that.
