my upload site used around 200gb bw this month. It's not surprising, since it's large, but are their ways to save some of that bw (ie compressing files server side, etc)

Where's the most of your bandwidth happening from? (ie upload or download of those files)

I would assume it's going to be download. Then if that's case then compress those files so they download that way.

Post a link to your site....

Try saving logos and other images as gif's if you're not already doing that.

Your logo itself is 48kb, save it as a gif and it'll be 3kb

    Gif 14kb

Edit: this 34kb savings probably won't do much lol.. not too familiar with other ways, hopefully someone else knows more

that's the only thing i can think of... if you're running a hosting service and hosting movies/pics, only thing you can do is compress them, but your users won't be too happy if you do that

Top 50 most popular files, delete

However, one could argue this may be bad for business :).

I didnt check the website, but does the site use thumbnails for images?

This way you can display a 8-10kb file first, then the users click on it for the fullsize version. This saves from all the people that DONT want to see the users pics in the first place, saves download time etc.

minus whale change the logo anyways...

    10k hits a day at 30kb = 300,000 kb = 300mb per day = 9gb per month

limit speed or get a real host that can acommodate you. 200GB isn't shit for a file hosting site.

Consider moving to an unmetered machine. (10mbit unmetered's can be had for around $200-240 from the planet..)

Or even a 100mbit 2.5TB plan. You can get those machines all day long for 100-120/mo.

Host pics on one server, videos on another, and your main content links to them. For example, get a hosting account with XYZ hosting and have all the images live there. Then get a second account with ABC hosting and upload all the videos there. Now your load is split across three servers. ;)
