is there a way to stop automatic downloads in safari? say i'm looking at a website that has a .doc file on it. when i click on it, it automatically downloads it to my "documents" folder. is there a way to make it where it prompts me to open or save, or either opens the file w/o saving it?

Hold down the option ('alt') button - "Save image to Desktop" will change to "Save Image as...", and "Download linked file" changes to "Download linked file as..."

Safari only dls when you left click. If you want it to perform other actions you either have to right click or ctrl+click.

The only other option is to stop the download in the downloads folder (clicking the x next to the dl).

You could also try finding a plug-in: http://pimpmysafari.com/plugins/?c=File+Viewers
