my current cpu is an AMD athlon 64 3000+ (on an msi rs480 motherboard). the setup is having trouble playing 720p videos. would upgrading the ram from 1g to 2g help with this? or would i have to upgrade the processor/mobo combo? or is there some other problem that might be causing the video to slow down, become choppy at times and sometimes freeze and cause an error that requires VLC to be restarted?

    edit:
would upgrading the video card solve the problem?

    i only have a p4 3.0 Ghz machine w/ a 7600GT and 1080 vids were very choppy.

But, I found out that the CoreAVC codec is very efficient and good. I got this and can play any HD vid smoothly...

decoding HD video just takes a lot of power. What video card do you have?

i have the same exact setup, athlon 64 3000+ with a gig of ram. i upgraded my video from an ati all in wonder 9600 128mb, to a gigabyte nvidia 7600 256mb. i noticed no difference when playing 720p/1080i video
    mine still stutters

i think the cpu is the bottleneck
