turbo buicks? was the SVO faster than the 5.0? I like that they came with better suspensions and brakes than the 5.0 ones, but what was their market?

not really. they were more to be a european car fighter as they had a more european flavor to them. Also may be a reason why they didnt sell all too well.

I could be wrong but ive never heard them referred to as fords answer to the turbo buicks especially since they came out at the exact same time.

I would say the 87-93 SEFI 5.0 was the turbo buick answer but i :dunno:

    No.

The Thunderbird/Cougar/Mark VIII competed directly with the GM G-bodies.

When it was discovered how fast the Buick Grand National turned out to be, the fan rivalry began between the Mustang and the GN, since both were the only two powerful muscle cars you could buy.

It was not intentional competition between Ford and GM.

The SVO was Ford's answer to the BMW 3-series. It was designed to compete with up-level euro sport coupes (hence: 16" wheels, Konis, 4-wheel discs, forged internals).

The turbocoupe/xr4ti/turbo GT/SVO all used essentially the same 2.3L SOHC turbo engine, with minor differences between the different models and years. (intercooler, injectors, ecu, intake manifolds were differerent).

The 84-85 SVOs weren't as fast as the 5.0s, but the 85.5-86's had the same HP as the 86 5.0GT, and the same 1/4 time (200hp, 15.2 quarter).

The 2.3 was a strong block, and the stock bottom end could handle 400hp+.

Had the SVO be continued for the 87 year, it would have severely whooped on the 5.0, as Ford had developed a aluminum DOHC head for the 2.3L, which made 270hp base. But Ford couldn't have a 4-cyl making over 50hp more than it's "performance" model, the GT, and sales were low due to the SVO's $16k price (5.0 GT was around $11k).

DOHC Head (IIRC, 3 were made, 1 is known to still exist today).
