So far we have about $600 pledged towards a new place for us to host our stuff. I've been looking into online data storage sites and right now this looks good: https://www.elephantdrive.com/help/pricingstructure_popup.aspx

    PROS:
    1. $349.95 a year
    2. 1 TB of space
    3. 1 TB of transfer a month
    4. Multiple user logins
    5. We can sync multiple folders to update automatically with their desktop program
    6. You can access it any place that has an internet access w/Java
    CONS:
    1. Strict TOS
    2. It is Java based, I've always hated applets
    3. No OSX/Linux support for their desktop program
    4. It isn't our own domain
    5. We've never used this service
    6. We run the risk of it being shut down
    My 2 cents:
    1. The main reason WS was screwed was because we had too many people who were leeching and because we were using it as an archival site. It is also the reason many of our other sites got shut down when we first started this stuff. So, using a data storage site bypasses that whole problem. And as much as I'd hate to do it, I believe that making this accessible to only people who have donated or have uploaded massive swaths of comics before keeps the leeches out.
    2. This is cheaper than the ~$1500 it would take for us to run a server with enough space. And worst case scenario, if it gets shut down we are out $350... not $1500.
    3. I've been playing around with it since yesterday and the online version of it is fairly easy to use. OSX and Linux get a bit crapped in that deal but their site says they're working on that.
    4. Warskrull could be turned into more of a listing site. Where we keep an updated list of what is uploaded, what isn't, etc. Or we could just phase it out and have it link to this forum.
Go ahead and test it out: https://www.elephantdrive.com/account/browse_trunk.aspx. User: otcc Pass: uppass.

Right now we have enough people pledging money towards this, if you guys want to go through with this let's do it.

Are the space requirements ok for what we use?

Just tried it out. Looks like it will for me. I do have a few questions.

We are going to have to keep this organized or it will spin out of control.
Is there limits on Uploading and Downloading?
    Stuff like that.

We never went over a TB, we got to about 400 gigs before we were castrated.
Same way we kept WS organized: you can create, edit, and delete folders within it. As long as everyone is uploading to the correct folders we are ok. Their TOS doesn't say anything about upload/download limits, I'm guessing that goes into our transfer.

    Question?

I completely understand asking for donations and uploads for access, but are there going to be minimums for uploads or donations to get you X number of days? Or is it that you promise to continually upload comics to keep getting access. If that is the case, is there a way to know who has uploaded what? Just a few things that came to mind. I know that right now I have not promised a donation, but I plan to since I don't have that much digitally (other then stuff that I grabbed off of Warskrull that most people probably already have). I know it may be a bit soon to think about these things, but they are something to think about.

oh and to guard against them purging it again, maybe just put the cbr or cbz file in it's own zip file and then acronym it. :dunno:
    i.e. if I upload spiderman 754, we just put SM754.zip or SM2007-08.zip

that way it isn't as blantant.

Well, I think most of us who have been active more or less know who is uploading and discussing and who just appeared to leech and disappeared. IDK about minimums and I don't want this to turn into a subscription based thing where if you pay X amount you get Y days, I'd rather that people who benefited from it give back something to keep it going. So, if all you can afford is $5, that is $5 that is more than we have right now.

For new people, I guess it will come down to having people who are already in vouching for you. That forces people to start interacting in the forum rather than just spamming me with PMs and continually begging for access in the access thread.

They have a beta for Mac out. Or you can try Parallels. Did you try the online version? :squint:

Too much of a hassle, I'm not going to sit through my collection and rename them to zip/rars and I doubt everyone else will either.

I can't get the applet to load with Firefox, but I also have a problem installing the newest version of Java on firefox. If I have to, I can run it with IE. But I really liked out old setup...and in 2 months, my internet speed is doubling, so the upping will be much nicer if we still used FTP.

got it to work in firefox.

and I'm on a powerbook, not one of your newfangled macintels. :wtc:
no i mean keep the regular comic filename intact, and just stick it in a zip folder for uploading.

Well personally i hate it. Its slow and ugly, and seems like a cheap way to go about things.

I'd much rather double my donation and get a server I can FTP to, but its your call.

Holy shit. It locked me out of Firefox for about 5 minutes. And it's still waiting for the applet to load.

What happens if we go past the TB of transfer? Does it shut down till the end of the month or do we have to pay extra?

It doesn't seem bad. Shame warskrull got shut down though. Let us know what you decide.

I couldn't get the java applet to work at all in Firefox, and in IE it worked but wouldn't let me download.

The desktop thing works ok, but it isn't perfect thats for sure.
