    Do not eat it. Period.

My father does sales consulting for the feed industry and he deals directly with chicken farmers.

The amount of salmonella in organic chicken is through the roof. You will see a 1000 fold increase in salmonella in organic chicken to "normal" chicken. This is due to the 1) no anti-biotics, 2) slaughtering process. When the chickens go to slaughter, they are washed in a pure water bath, instead of chlorine like the normal process. So one chicken has salmonella, the rest after them will as well. One of the farmers my father deals with, he only raises organic chickens, some 3 million a year. He will not eat his product, ever. Should tell you something.

With organic eggs, you are somewhat ok. You need to REALLY wash them. They dip them in water instead of chlorine. So once again, one has salmonella the rest behind them will. Just wash the eggs really well, pref in chlorine and you will be set.

Cliffs: never eat organic chicken, wash organic eggs very well.

Also, organic chickens are the biggest threat we face to the spread of bird flu, as they are raised in a pretty sterile environment. There are massive plans to slaughter all organic birds in the country in a single day if bird flu arrives, as it will spread through all organic flocks like a fire.

Yes, my father who was a farmer for 40 years, deals directly with the farming industry has no idea what he is talking about.

I said NOTHING about other organic products. Chickens are simply flithy animals.

there are a slew of contributing factors to the problems organic chickens face. i can expand if you want :mamoru:

And if you cook your chicken and eggs properly, salmonella isn't an issue :dunno:

Proof of this "organic farms birds will be killed first" statement?

    http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/salmonellosis_g.htm
    How do people catch Salmonella?

Salmonella live in the intestinal tracts of humans and other animals, including birds. Salmonella are usually transmitted to humans by eating foods contaminated with animal feces. Contaminated foods usually look and smell normal. Contaminated foods are often of animal origin, such as beef, poultry, milk, or eggs, but all foods, including vegetables may become contaminated. Many raw foods of animal origin are frequently contaminated, but fortunately, thorough cooking kills Salmonella. Food may also become contaminated by the unwashed hands of an infected food handler, who forgot to wash his or her hands with soap after using the bathroom.

Well, secret inside information that I found (on MSN homepage!) leads me to believe that the bird flu will be vaccinated by the time it might come here.

Think about it for a second. These birds are innoculated against nothing, they live in environments where they aren't exposed to immune risks. they are a perfect testbed to spread the bird flu and rather fast as soon as one gets infected. they can't be given the bird flu vaccine for birds, so they are a bit out of luck :mamoru:

they slaughter whole herds of cattle if they think one has mad cow. the will kill every chicken on the eastern shore if the bird flu hits. of course, there are gov't programs to sterilize the farms and get them back rolling again.

plus it is cheaper right now to slaughter the entire herd and spread them as fertilizer to grow more feed :run:

They'll kill every chicken, organic or non-organic. And flu vaccines aren't 100% anyways so..

I'm just going to keep cooking my chicken thoroughly and not worry about it. Life IS the leading cause of death.
