Anyone else lookin forward to this movie? With Spielberg directing and Tom Cruise in it, I have a feeling this could be the blockbuster movie of the summer. Did people like the SuperBowl ad for it?

For the most part, I've given up on looking forward to movies. Almost every time, it's a horrible letdown.

And I really don't have high hopes for this one.

I just want to point out that, in general, I try to avoid movies that get this label.

Yeah "blockbuster" movies can frequently disappoint, but I don't think this will be one of them. Spielberg usually puts out pretty solid movies, Cruise is a pretty good actor, but most importantly unlike a lot of blockbuster with terrible stories and plots, at least this one we know is based on a very, very exceptional story.

I usually end up seeing the blockbuster summer movies though. i walk out of the theater and say they are pretty good. Then a couple weeks later I start thinking how dumb they were.

That's because it's all over-the-top emotional manipulation, with no attention to story consistency or technial accuracy.

OH NOES! The aliens blew up the white house!
YAY! Will Smith beat up an alien!
WTF? With no knowlege of the alien computer protocols or architecture, Jeff Goldblum connected to the mothership's network with his Mac, and gave them the [email protected] virus, which he just happened to have. :ugh2:

Well it's even lamer if he did write it. Because to write a virus, you need to have intimate knowledge of the operating system and hardware. I think it's more likely that the internet is so great that you can even download mothership-disabling viruses. :mamoru:

I don't see War of the Worlds as being the kind of move that would have those kind of absurb plot holes. It's based on a pretty extraordinary novel, so I'd imagine it will be a lot more dark and suspenseful, not funny and cartoony like ID4.

they're going to have to change a lot of stuff from the original movie. i guess they're going to have to take out the square dancing scene :( :( lol

Exactly. That's exactly my point: the title of a good book doesn't guarantee a good movie.

It was based on the 3 principles of Robots which is basically what his book is about. Except they are short stories and the Movie was just one story.

it wasn't based on short stories.

it was edited so it would look so.

    it's completely different screenplay, independent.

I read some of those short stories, that's not it.

No it wasn't. As lionsgraphics said, it was a totally different movie originally called "hardwired", about a robot war, and they slapped the Asimov title on and threw in some references to the 3 laws once the stuido realized they owned the rights to Asimov's work.

I want to see it but when I saw the preview...they said..."Get out of the truck!" And it was like a Dodge Caravan.
