wanting to build a makeshift range ... questions

i have a 1/2 acre that i can do whatever i want with as my house will be going on it in a year or so.

in the mean time, i'd like to do something so i can use it to do some shooting in the mean time.

i was thinking about just getting a load or two of dirt dumped on it at the far end of the property and set up some target holders in front of this. is this a good idea? has anyone done it?

any other suggestions are appreciated :x:

you do realize how small a 1/2 acre is, right?

My boss has 10 acres would that be enough for something like this? He does have "neighbors" in that this 10 acres is his backyard (he lives outta nowhere). He's shown interest in firearms. :x:

10 acres would be plenty for a pistol range and you could squeeze a small rifle range in too if possible. As an example of how big an acre is the blue in an acre

we are trying to do the same thing at a friends land. he has 28-30 acres behind their pond. would a few layers of railroad ties be sufficient as a backstop? they somehow have a 10'x8' pile stacked 4 or 5 high.

I'd rather move dirt than railroad ties. I guess if you don't have a tractor then it might be easier the other way.

A dirt pile will be sort of "self-healing" (each bullet hole collapses on itself) while a stack of railroad ties likely won't.

The outdoor range I occasionally frequent has some very impressive berns - probably about 20' deep at the base. Not sure how the structured them - perhaps there's gravel in them, or maybe they're just dirt.

Dirt (or... sand) is pretty good. Ref: theboxoftruth where they shoot sandbags. Stops even rifle bullets in a few inches.

  19. We have like 50 acres of land on one plot, and about 110-120 on another in WV. We had a little range basically a bunch of wood and a piece of plywood for the targets. That thing is shot to shit now but it was pretty sweet.

it's not necessarily the back drop, but what lies beyond it. You wouldn't just want to put a dumptruck load of dirt in your lot, if it's in a residential neighborhood, or if you have houses behind your backstop. should you accidentally miss, you wouldn't want to shoot a house

i wonder if it'd be cheaper to just get a bunch of sandbags :o

the way it will be positioned, there are no houses within range. 99% of it will be rimfire anyway :o
