Photoshop users: when you have a picture in photoshop, and you trace around an object, select inverse, how do you keep the object in color and make the rest B&W?

i have been trying to figure this out forever. i could cut the object out and layer i suppose, but how do you change the background layer to B&W?

is there a way to transition the two? so you can have a gradient change?

    thanks in advance:bowdown:

just a quick thought... might it be easier to make the image grayscale and use the history brush?
