I have been wanting to get into anime and manga so i figured i'd ask you guys what I should check out.

I haven't really had much experience with anime. I've seen a little bit of rurouni kenshin (sp?) and I liked that.

As for manga I got into ranma 1/2 a while ago, but that is all.

As for genres, I am really interested in checking out all of them, so when you post recommendations could you include the genre as that'll help me out a lot.

Let's hope I get to find something good :x:

Kare Kano had the potential to be a masterpiece, but the production problems ruined it.

As far as Haruhi, I didn't buy into the whole out of order presentation. If the story had been good enough, it could have stood on its' own without the gimmick.

I'm not the only one who doesn't completely worship it. A ton of people will bitch about my FLCL rating too, but that's what I thought of it.

And here I was about to point out that you missed something.

    As for mangas.

Berserk is great. Gantz is also a good read.

For comedy, Golden Boy is pretty good. Azumanga Daioh is another good one.

For action, you can start with some classics such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop.

There aren't too many comedies- and most of the ones that are have Japanese comedy which is a bit different if you haven't been exposed to it before. Check out Golden Boy, Azumanga Daioh, Genshiken, Lucky Star, Ouran host club, and kore ga watashi no goshujin sama.

My first anime was Bleach, it's a good one to start with. The Bleach manga is really good too, it's one of the most popular manga series in Japan.

Death Note is another really cool anime that hasn't been mentioned yet.

For comedy you should watch the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, fucking great show, and it's really funny
