I bought my wife a D40x as a wedding present. I want to get another lense to go with it. We shoot mostly family functions, birthdays, christmas and nature. We like to hike. I dont want to spend a ton..
BTW I am a camera nub, been reading up on things, learning slowly

Sell whatever kit lens that came with it and get the 18-200mm VR and be done with it. Yes it's a little pricy, but it will be VERY handy. Image stabilization throughout the entire range and can go from wide to superzoom with one twist of the wrist. About 95% of photos you will take can be done with this lens.

Yeah, but its the last lens you'll need for a long while given you're just a normal hobbyist. I almost switched to Nikon for that lens. :ugh: Perfect travel lens. Compare that $750 with the $1500 I spent on two lenses to cover those ranges, and I think you'll see that it is a very good deal.

I got mine for like $650 and then I sold my 18-55mm for like $120 so $530 for the lens was well worth it.

it may seem expensive but think of it like this..that single lens will be all you need unless you want to go more profesional( which doesn't seem that way) if you buy other lenses you will indeed end up wasting more money..id get one for me if I could spare the money.

whoops, I missed the d40x part. The sigma will have to be manually focused.
