I'm looking to purchase my first hand gun, and am seriously considering the Ruger Blackhawk Convertible. I'm deffinately looking at revolvers over semi-autos because they're less complicated for my experience with guns. I liked this one because it gave me the option of switching between a .357/38 special and a 9mm, nothing wrong with a little variety.

If anyone has any views on the blackhawk or some other guns that I might want to consider I'll listen. Don't want my first gun to be something I'm not perfectly happy with. :bigthumb:

If you want some info on Rugers go to the board I go to

    http://www.rugerforum.com

They have info on all models of Ruger and the people there give you serious answers and can answer about anything

The best advice also would be to go and rent and test out the gun you wish to purchase for things like how it fits in your hand, recoil, weight and accuracy to see if its something you like.

I was able to try it out, and it felt really good in my hand, and wasn't able to really notice a recoil that was bad. I'll check out that forum, thanks.

Stick with S&W for revovlers, get the 686 if you want a nice 6 inch barrel model.

There are other companies that make good revolvers, Ruger and Taurus almost make good ones.
S&W revolvers are more expensive too

If you want a revolver then get a Colt Python.

How good is Taurus, I've seen the name around but really haven't heard of them before.

After looking up the info on the 686, it seems pretty shweet.

A friend of mine has a Python, really an awesome gun but it's a bit out of my budget.

THey are very solid reliable guns, and not that expensive, I had priced a Large Frame SS .44 mag for just over $400
they come with a lifetime warrenty.. I have shot several Taurus including a .454 Casull, its a great gun

What is goin to be your main purpose for this gun? If your lookin for one to hunt deer the blackhawk is a great gun I have one and have complete confedence with it on whitetail and I have shot a ton of rabbits with it using 38spls. My dad has both a S&W and a Colt Python. I prefer the Colt over the S&W but both are great guns. I supose for hunting I would chose the Blackhawk...I just like it better for deer...with smaller game I use a Berreta 9mm or my Browning buckmark.

Well for the most part it'll be my all purpose gun. It's official title is for home use and defense.

Sorry, I'm not going to go and crack walnuts with it. By home use meant, it's not going to be a gun that I take hunting with me since I don't really hunt, I fish but not hunt. So it's going to be at home most of the time, except when taken out to the range. Mainly I just want this to be a gun I can keep for a long time, and that was the model that I liked. I tried a Taurus a few days ago by the way and it just didn't feel right in my hand.

get an older smith wheelgun. the ones from before they had automatic trigger locks built in. i've seen three of them break within 100 rounds, and the part that broke was the trigger lock, which completely disabled the pistol. you wouldn't be very happy if that happened in the middle of a home defense situation.
