Report: Wanderlei Silva To Drop To Middleweight
    By Jason Perkins | January 03, 2009

After being on the wrong side of another brutal KO, Wanderlei Silva appears set to cut down to middleweight.

His most recent loss to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is the third time the former PRIDE champion has been knocked out in his past five fights; a span that includes four losses and was apparently the impetus for the move.

Silva has often fought under the 205 limit and is considered smallish for a light-heavyweight, making a move to middleweight a feasible proposition and one that would see him become an instant contender.

The ferocious Brazilian will be in new territory battling fighters smaller than himself. Silva has often taken on fighters much bigger including, Mirko Cro Cop, Kazuyuki Fujita, and Mark Hunt. If he brings his trademark power and ferocity along with him to 185lbs. then he'll be a scary proposition for any middleweight, including current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Yeah he had to do something like this to keep relevant in the MMA game. I feel bad for Wandy, while it's true he's lost 4 out of his last 5, all of the fights were against top guys, I don't think he's anywhere near done, but his recent record is really bad.

    I love Wanderlei, but no.

I'm very excited for this. especially since 185 seems to be loaded with grpaplers that wont KO him again.

    .

He matches up a lot better with the people at 185 than heroes at 205.

Who would gave ever thought we would be talking about Wandy matching up with anyone(besides chuck) instead of how they match up to him :hs:

he needs to throw a good straight instead of swinging for the fences all the time. he leaves himself so exposed :hs:

word to this. At first it's overwhelming especially with his power and ferocity, but if you know his style by now like Rampage did, it's absolutely beatable :o

I wish he used his bjj more.

He was meant to do this after his loss to Liddell.

He has at times shown changes to his style, but he isn't disciplined enough to stick with it, and eventually reverts to wading in with winging hooks, and gets nailed.

Was he ever on A.Silva's training team or anything back in Pride (thinking of that gif of A.Silva dancing and him clapping on an entrance).

Wanderlai always has the potential to win matches.

But I think his time is over. MMA is basically witnessing the old guard being phased out.

Please tell me you're joking. Leben couldn't even win TUF, and you want him to fight Wandy?

    .

he has been training more technical standup, its just that whe he gets pressured or he doesnt KO them in 2 minutes he starts reverting back to caveman swinging.

He has all the technical ability, he just keeps falling back to his old ways. Look at the Rampage fight until he got KO'd. His stand up looked great until that flurry of hooks. Chuck round 1 he was playing the machida role and was passive, countering, technical, then turned into caveman Wand. :wtc:

Leben's game has improved dramatically since TUF. he's a more complete fighter and got his head screwed on straight

he'll never be a contender again, but he's a perpetual gatekeeper, so it'd be a good way for wandy to put himself on the MW map. that, and he likes to throw down, so it'd be a fun match up in that sense
