.22 isn't for protecting yourself, its for fun and practice. 9mm is the round you should be looking at, its powerful enough for defense and cheaper so you can practice with it more. The P99 is made in 9mm.

mmm well that's a pretty massive difference.

The p22 isn't exactly a defense round, not that I’d want to be shot by it. The 40 sw P99 would be a great gun. I'm looking into one myself. Definitely suitable for defense.

Other things to take into consideration.

The p22 will be like half the price, so you could buy a shot gun for HD. Shots cheap ammo so you can get a ton of practice in. You can get like 700 rounds of 22 for the price of 50 rounds of 40 sw

I disagree. My .22s are for protecting myself against those dangerous squirrels.

I really want to try a P99 but nobody I know has one :( I should probably just buy one

Go with the .40 over .22 for home protection, but as was said being your first gun you might want to consider the 9mm one, I have 2 P99's .40 and 9, lovem both.

I keep my XD9 at my bedside instead of my P99 .40. The P99 .40 has a pretty
    nasty recoil to it.

I also am notably more accurate with the XD9 but yeah....the P99 is very light
and the recoil is "notable". Everyone who has fired it has mentioned it is
    pretty evil. :dunno:

Personally I'm looking into a Sig 226 in .40 so I have something with more
    weight to absorb the recoil.

.22 for plinking and rodent annihilation, .40 for defense.

If you want it strictly for HOME defense you should get a shotgun.

:werd: haven't shot an xd40 so I can't compare the two but the p99 has a bit more recoil then a .40 glock, the 9mm P99 isn't bad at all though.

    Glock Model 22 in .40
(didn't mean to restate the obvious, but wanted to distinguish between mod. & cal. 22)
You can buy an aftermarket upper and mag that chambers .22 for plinking/targets

I've fired an XD40 and it wasn't much different than the XD9, much less
violent of a recoil than my P99. I'm still sort of torn about getting an XD40
and selling the P99, but meh.

I own an HK USP full size 9mm and I will recommend that weapon until I die. Do some research, try to find one to shoot if you can
