so what you are saying is- givin that lens, the image quality is acceptable?

either way, i had a blast watching/photgraphing. and the pics are 11tybillion X better then i could have done with my p&s

this has a lot less to do with the lens and a lot more to do with the photographer understanding use to use autofocus in these situations

you have a d300 with a very good auto focus system

    learn to use it

i woudl recommend setting the camera to

AF-C (Continuous), single or multi-point cluster

set the auto-focus to engage when the AF-on button is depressed and held down

    learn to track subjects

also be aware that any time you shoot water with spray in daylight, it will be very high contrast and grab attention of the AF-S system ...

your issue has less to do with sharpness and more to do with focus

consider shooting at f/6.3 if you are worried about lens sharpness and bump up the ISO if you need more light

    shoot no slower than 1/1000

well sharp photos and OOF photos are two completely different things...
can you post some 100% crops. i'd tightly crop any of these anyways. :bigthumb:

a photo will appear soft if it is not focused in the correct place

its also possible to have a perfectly focused image that still isn't very sharp.

and in this context, it is more likely to deal with focus

moving subject, static focus, high-contrast water spray

ISO 800 on the D300 is VERY clean, so dont hesitate to bump it up!

not necessarily over/ under exposed, just a lot harsher light and more contrast.

overcast skies are good bc the light is diffused and low contrast.

yes it is the ski ranch. the water level is low in the boat lake b/c they pump it into the cable lake to keep it in operation
