I set up a W2K server VPN server for our work. The server works fine for a few days and then for unknown reasons, the public NIC card goes tits up. So I network into my computer (bypassing the VPN in question), Terminal Services into the VPN server, disable and re-enable the Public NIC and both VPN and this other program start to work!

What would cause a NIC card to just stop responding - keeping in mind the local NIC card is functioning normally since I can TS into the box. Even pinging the server doesn't work until I disable and re-enable.

    Any ideas?

My first thought would be drivers. that's very odd though, never heard of something that this happening. Post up if you figure out the problem. I'm curious to know what it is.

    I would say drivers.

Alright - it's using a D-Link on the Public, and a Linksys for the Private (Ironically detected as a RealTek card that I never bothered to fix the drivers for). I think I may try an experiment and reverse the functions of the two cards as well (make the Public card Private and vice versa). But first, I'll get me some drivers.

Lol - you'll love this. I downloaded DLinks W2K drivers for the card but windows didn't want to install them. So I figure, "What does it know?" I force the installation, and then procedes to tell me that my network cable is unplugged. I reboot, same problem. Reinstall the drivers that MS defaulted - bam it's online again! So I'm back to square one! I think I'll try and swap them to see what happens!

Douse D-link with lighter fluid and ignite!

I've always wondered what was involved in upgrading to Firewire.

Yeah I do - it's another Linksys which I wanted to avoid (old habits die!). I guess I can try that

low budget company... Actually, I mean I'm in charge of buying what we need, I just hate buying surplus. I'd feel guilty when I start to lay into upper management about pissing away money if I laid down cash everytime!

    End of story. :)

Just a control card if you don't have the firewire built in.

FYI and thanks for all the suggestions:

I switched the two IP's around and the problem followed the card. Swapped out the card and we'll see what happens. Anyone ever heard of a card stop working after a couple of days though?

WOL shouldn't put the card to sleep.

Look in the BIOS and make sure all the power management features are turned off. Just an idea that came to me.
