Two days ago someone posted a link to one of my sites on their craigslist posting. He was using something on my site as an example of what he wanted. Anyway, when I checked analytics, my traffic for that day was like 2,000% higher than usual. I was like "wtf?" and checked and saw it was all referred traffic from a CL posting. I've heard that massive traffic spikes are bad cuz google will think you're buying traffic from link farms to try and boost your ratings. Is that true? Or does google only care if the traffic comes from shady sites like linkfarmz.co.ru? I'm only white hat and I'm on page 2 of google and page 1 of Yahoo and I don't want to lose my ranking cuz some dude posted my site on CL and i get massive traffic spikes. Does google penalize for this kind of thing?
