    Automated Virus Removal Tool

Virus removal tool for anyone interested in home, small or large business based deployments. Tool is built into a bootable cd rom and will scan every local hard drive on your machine with current virus definitions without ever loading the Windows shell. The tool uses the PE or PreBoot environment to utilize the virus scan engine, this enables the engine to scan files that would normally be in use or locked by a windows process, by not letting the registry and software hives to load, this tool can virtually scan 100% of all files including compressed and system volume data. You can also get McAfee Stinger for free. It's a virus remover that fits on a floppy disk -- that's good, because you can make the disk read-only to keep viruses from sabotaging the scanner. It runs in Windows Safe Mode and it's made by a reputable corporation.

I've used it several times on my company's computers, many of which run Windows 2000 and never had a firewall on them. Tons of crap on those computers, and Stinger + AdAware + Sygate Personal Firewall got rid of all the evil programs.

It uses NTFS4DOS from bootdisk.com, from there I added the command line virus scanner and couple of scripts that will scan compressed files etc and made it all bootable, so all the end user has to do is pop open the cd rom and assuming the boot order is set to cd-rim first, the cd will boot and the scan will automatically begin on every local drive, also works for RAID configurations as well...the virus defs can be updated 2 ways, one is to make a new cd the other to use a script that we have..hope this helps

even with safe mode the windows shell is still loading and likewise for the registry hive...root kits and other malicious activity can still be launched via safe mode..best way to disinfect a machine is for the hard disks to be scanned while still in the pre-boot enviornment...this cd bascially makes it fool proof for end users, without having to mess with floppies etc...just insert the cd and reboot (boot sequence has to be set for cd-rom as primary) and the cd will automatically mount every volume you have and scan all local hard drives including compressed files...

that one you can boot direct to a DOS command line, avoiding all the windows crap, and get in a good scan.

Good little util from Sophos, uses their current detection lib, and doesn't cost a cent.
